My Passion for Writing Has Finally Returned

By Ryan J

When I think back, it must be well over a year since I last felt this passion for writing.

I don’t know what happened back then but the joy I had for writing, well, it just kinda left me.

Sure, I’d write an article or two each week —or whenever I felt like it. Struggle on through, force words on to the screen and hit that publish button every once in a while.

But for the most part, the consistency and pleasure that was once there in the beginning had gone. And try as I might I just couldn’t get it back.

I tried experimenting with different styles. Tested my skills in various genres. Enrolled in writing challenges. Wrote about current events, my own life experiences and even explored stories of old.

But nothing seemed to work.

I just couldn’t find the drive to turn up every day and flex my writing muscles.

At one point I even thought to myself;

“This must be it then. I’ve run out of momentum. My writing journey has fizzled out and come to an end.”

But then, at the beginning of this month (August 2021), something magical happened.

After another failed attempt to kickstart my writing desire through challenges, I decided it was time to go back to what I felt most comfortable with, writing non-fiction articles, and once again forced myself to get started on another piece, but this time it was different.

Somehow the words began to flow again, just like they used to.

There was no stopping and starting between paragraphs. No procrastination, frustration or anger as there had been before.

Everything just fell into place as it was supposed to and it felt good.

I began to wonder;

“Was this it, the turning point I’d been searching for? Had the motivation I’d been craving for the past twelve months somehow returned?”

You’re damn right it had!

There is no secret sauce.

I’d love to tell you I followed a certain routine or discovered a secret formula/life hack that aided me in finding my mojo for writing again, but I can’t.

Much like losing it, I have no idea how or why my writing motivation returned. It just did.

But I will say this.

It would never have come back had I not kept on persevering and forcing my way through the tough times, even when I wanted to give up.

If I had rolled over and admitted defeat at the first sign of writing resistance then there’s no way I’d be feeling a resurgence of excitement with each new piece created as I have been over these past few weeks.

So, if you’ve been going through a spate of writer’s block recently or have lost your writing inspiration, don’t let it get you down.

Just keep doing what you can each day, don’t put yourself under too much pressure and eventually, you’ll find your passion for creating again.

And trust me, when you find it — which you will — you’ll be glad you never gave up trying.

Thanks for reading.
