Summary

Nancy Oglesby reminisces about her mother's flower garden through a personal narrative centered around the iris flowers that now bloom in her own garden, symbolizing the enduring bond and friendship between her and her mother.

Abstract

In a reflective piece titled "My Mother’s Flowers," Nancy Oglesby shares a fond memory of her mother's meticulously tended garden, which was filled with vibrant iris flowers. She recalls the purple and yellow irises, the latter representing friendship, which her mother considered her to be, beyond being a daughter. As she walks through her own garden, the sight of a yellow iris blooming unexpectedly brings a surge of emotions, connecting her to her mother's legacy. The article is accompanied by images of her garden, showcasing the irises in full bloom, and invites readers to engage with more content from Dancing Elephants Press, including poetry by Dr. Gabriella Korosi and a spring contest. Oglesby also encourages readers to subscribe to her articles and join Medium.

My Mother’s Flowers

Dancing Elephant Press Prompt 31 / Share a Fond Memory

Author’s garden this morning.

Not once, not ever did I plant a single bulb. iris grows rampant.

My mother’s garden tended with devoted care bloomed magnificently.

Purple iris stood sentries on the sunny side their rows straight and true.

Not just a daughter she proclaimed, a friend — yellow represents friendship.

Strolling my gardens morning coffee hot, a shock yellow iris bloom.

Tears spring from my eyes tended with devoted care gifts from my mother.

My iris garden is fully on display now heralding friendship.

The scent of an iris gently nudges thoughts of Mom bearing my heart home.

More images for your enjoyment. Can you imagine what this will look like when all of these irises are in bloom? YIKES!

I planted the other colors when I created this iris garden in front. The original yellow garden is still in the backyard. Author’s image this morning.
The purple in the center is the color of the irises that were in my mother’s garden at the house I grew up in. Author’s image taken this morning.
