My Medium Story Went Mini Viral (3K+ Views) And I Can’t Help but Laugh
This is a surefire case of the right headline at the right time.
I’ve been writing on Medium for several years, although I’ve only been writing seriously on Medium for the past ~9 months.
In this time, I’ve never had a Medium story reach 4-digit views.
Not even close.
This is a nut I still have to crack on this platform.
Well, that tide turned last week. I’ve now reached 3,400+ views on a single Medium story, which I happened to write just 2 weeks ago.
For reference purposes, my last “hit” story reached ~280 views. I wrote that one last fall. This is a significant bump up.
Also, I do recognize one similarity between my last hit story and the one that went mini-viral this week. They both cover the topic of current events.
Two weeks ago I had to go on a particularly rough personal trip. Before I left, I wrote a Medium story about a budding Olympian who I was becoming a big fan of. Here’s that short story:
Because of the nature of that trip, I wasn’t focused on the news. When I returned from the trip, imagine my surprise when 2 things became abundantly clear:
- The Olympian I wrote about was suddenly embroiled in an international scandal regarding performance-enhancing drugs
- My story had gone mini-viral
I was stunned when I logged into my Medium account and noticed more views and reads than I had ever seen in my life on Medium. It had over 1K views!
Here’s an updated version of that screenshot:

However, just like my last hit story, I noticed that most of the engagement was external:

Therefore, I‘ll only be making pennies from this Medium story:

I amended my story as soon as I heard about the controversy. I added a footnote informing readers about the scandal and my opinion on it. However, my story headline continues to raise eyebrows.
When I think about how this happened, it was a clear case of “right place, right time.”
Kamila is an international figure skater who is at the top of her game. Then a scandal broke that raised serious questions about her performance. This was after she helped the ROC win team gold and right before she started her women’s singles competition this week at the Olympics. This controversy caused quite an uproar, which resulted in a lot of conflicted emotions and outrage at the personal level.
At least one stranger had found my story and tweeted it, and with an added snarky comment. It doesn’t hurt my feelings — I don’t blame them. I’m passionate about the Olympics myself. The politics and cheating scandals during every Olympics season are enough to rile me up.
The story is still gaining traction, although waning now. Even though I won’t have the true viral story experience from this, it’s nice to have a taste of it. I’ll make a mental note and file away what I’ve learned.
But I can’t help but laugh.
