My Mary Kay/ Avon Experience
Frustrated salesperson

It was supposed to be easy. That’s what the Independent Sales Director said at Mary Kay.
“The product basically sells itself!” Cheryl Serdar, my Independent Sales Director said to me on the phone.
“Yeah, but I’ve bought the business cards, set up a web site, contacted fifty family members and friends, wore the Mary Kay pin on my shirt around town, bought the brochures, invested $700 so far in inventory and miscellaneous items, and so far, have only sold 1 tube of lipstick that my mother purchased because she felt bad. When does the product start selling itself?”
“You have to give it time. Everybody knows that when you first start your own business, it takes time to develop a clientele list. Just hang in there,” she comforted.
So I hung in there. I continued harrassing people about buying Mary Kay products. Only to be told over and over again, “Why should I have a personal beauty consultant when I can just go to Walgreens and purchase my make-up?”
I couldn’t really find a solid answer for that.
Over the year that I’ve been a consultant, I’ve made $5.00. I don’t know if direct sales is the way to go for me. I thought maybe the products were too expensive at Mary Kay, so I thought I would give Avon a try. So I called and left messages with several people and no one called me back for like three weeks. Then, finally I went on the Avon website and signed myself up. I figured if I left enough information, someone would eventually call me. So I paid the $20 to become a representative.
It’s been a while and I’m still waiting for someone to call me and I’m still waiting for my training packet that never comes in the mail. So I called customer service and they keep telling me that I should get the kit ANYDAY NOW. Yeah, right.
So, I’m sitting here upset, because I have no college education, no experience in anything other than being a waitress, which I’ve been doing forever, and I feel frustrated. This is what happens when you don’t get a trade or any education. You end up either working at the mall, grocery store, or a fast food restaurant for minimum wage, or voila!, you can be a waitress and earn $2.00 an hour, plus tips! Whoo hoo!
So, I surrendered and accepted my lot in life and went ahead and applied for a waitressing job at a nearby seafood restaurant. I got the job, but I’m not exactly looking forward to it. Now, I have to go through a vigorous, boot camp training program while enduring being trained by an 18-year-old smartass who thinks he knows everything … terrific …!
My orientation starts on Saturday. Meanwhile, I will keep waiting for someone to visit my Mary Kay site, and wait for that stupid Avon training packet to come in the mail.

After writing this and letting off a little steam, I decided to have a more positive outlook. I contacted the Avon customer service and the online specialist told me I could take the free online training after signing in. So I’ve been doing that, and I feel better. Also, I decided to take some of the free samples I had from Mary Kay and put a box of them out by our mailbox, figuring I had nothing to lose. We’ll see how that works. Today, I outlined my business program goals:
1. Take the online training course. 2. Learn product. 3. Advertise. 4. Buy business cards/ brochures 5. Have an ultimate goal of setting up a cart/kiosk in the mall selling products.
I think this last goal will take some time, but, at least I have a waitressing job to help pay the bills and I can use that money to help fund my Mary Kay and Avon businesses and eventually save up money to invest in my cart.
It has been fun going over this and actually getting my feelings and goals down on paper. Hopefully, one day, perhaps I can run my home-based business and quit my waitressing job. My fingers are crossed.
