My lowest-earning month on Medium in 11 months
What gives?
I was talking about the summer slump a few months ago. During summertime, a lot of industries decline as people are spending time with family and friends, vacationing, and traveling.
They’re not on their phones or on the computer as much as normal so naturally, a decline can happen. That’s what went on with my Medium income this summer.
It was the first time I experienced it since going full-time on the platform and I wasn’t prepared but, two months later, my income is still falling.
Here’s what I think is happening…
Why my Medium income keeps dropping
First, swings in income are natural.
I don’t expect to make exactly the same amount monthly, here on Medium. I know changes will occur.
But, I wasn’t expecting that I’d still be in a summer slump. We’re 2 days away from September.
Maybe we are, or maybe, it’s just me.
Next, I know that algorithms change and I know that your reach on a platform can adjust.
That’s the thing about working on a platform where they control those things. It’s out of your hands and you have to just roll with the punches.
It’s why I push multiple income streams so much.
For example, if I know my income will be 50% less on Medium, I’d try to make that up elsewhere, by trying to earn that difference on another income stream like brand deals or something.
Here’s what I think has changed…
1. The summer slump
Eh? It is still technically summer but, schools are back in session for a lot of the U.S. and I think I should be past that now.
Who know if this is technically driven by the edge of the summer slump or not?
2. Writing less
Guilty!
My goal is always to produce as much as I can on Medium. Writing on this platform feels like a dream. I get to express myself creatively and get paid for it! I write what I want, when I want, and earn money for my thoughts.
It’s amazing.
Why am I writing less?
August got busy.
I experienced a tiny bit of writer’s block.
I also didn’t feel like writing, which isn’t typical for me.
As I was getting into gear for the end of summer and back to school for my son, priorities changed and I just didn’t feel like writing like I usually do.
As a result, 20 articles were published for August instead of my typical 30+!
3. Changes on Medium
We have new leadership.
Things are changing. One change I noticed so far that I’m not fond of is this…
When I land on Medium, normally there’s that bar at the top that shows the writers and publications I’m following.
I’ll click them often to see what their latest writing is. It looked like your profile pic circle with a number by it, to show how many stories you published recently.
It’s changed and I think it’s impacted my views.
My stats are way down.
Does anybody feel the same?
Sure you can click on “Following” but, something about clicking the face of the person or pub. I like the old setup a lot better, personally.
TL;DR
My income has dropped and I’m not happy about it.
Things like this are out of your control, to an extent.
The month isn’t over but, I’ll earn less than $1,500 this month ($1,500 is usually the bare minimum I make) which is the lowest I’ve made in almost a year.
I’ll write an update once these last few days of the month wrap up.
