Last month, my wife went for her annual medical check-up from her company. She had done the same thing last year in 2022, and everything looked normal. However, this time, the result came with a referral to see an oncologist. She was diagnosed with FAM in both breasts. I was worried, so I tried to understand what FAM is.

Here is what I learned about it.

FAM stands for fibroadenoma mammae, which is a type of benign tumour that forms in the breast tissue. Based on current research, FAM is not cancerous and does not increase the risk of breast cancer. However, it can cause discomfort, pain, or changes in the shape of the breasts.

FAM usually occurs in women aged 15 to 35 years old. It is mostly caused by hormonal changes or imbalances. The size and number of FAM can vary depending on the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or menopause. FAM can also be influenced by family history, birth control pills, or hormone replacement therapy.

The treatment for FAM depends on the size, discomfort of the patient, and age of the patient. Some FAM will reduce or disappear by themselves after adopting a healthy lifestyle, such as daily exercise for 30 minutes per day for five days a week, eating healthy food, and reducing stress. Another option is surgery to remove the FAM if it is too big and causes discomfort. This can be done under local or general anaesthesia. The surgery can leave a scar and may affect the shape of the breast. A third option is called cryoablation, which is a procedure that destroys the FAM by freezing it with a special needle that injects gas into the tumour. This can be done under local anaesthesia and does not leave a scar. These options should be discussed with a specialist oncologist surgeon and based on the preference of the patient.

There is some research that suggests that women with multiple or complex FAM may have a slightly higher risk of developing breast cancer later in life. This may be due to genetic or hormonal factors that influence both FAM and breast cancer. Therefore, it is important to monitor FAM regularly and report any changes to your doctor. Some doctors may suggest a biopsy of the FAM to make sure it is benign.

To prevent FAM from recurring or growing larger, you can make some lifestyle changes, such as eating a balanced diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and healthy fats. Avoid processed foods, red meat, alcohol, and caffeine. Exercise regularly for at least 30 minutes a day, five times a week. Reduce stress and practice relaxation techniques, such as meditation, yoga, breathing exercises, or massage. Quit smoking and avoid exposure to secondhand smoke.

For all women out there, you can perform a self-checking breast examination every month to check for any changes or lumps in your breasts. If you notice anything unusual, report it to your doctor as soon as possible. For all men out there, you can support your spouse or family members who have FAM by being understanding and caring.

FAM is not cancerous and does not increase the risk of breast cancer. However, it can cause some challenges or discomforts for women who have it. Therefore, it is important to be informed and proactive about FAM and how to deal with it.

I hope this article helps to understand more about FAM and how to cope with it.

I wish you all good health and happiness.
