Summary

Kristina God, a writer, reflects on the emotional impact of subscribers unsubscribing from her mailing list and emphasizes the importance of a strong, reciprocal relationship with her readers.

Abstract

Kristina God articulates the disheartening experience of witnessing readers opt out from her mailing list, equating the feeling to a metaphorical "knife to the heart." Despite the sting of losing subscribers, she acknowledges an even more disconcerting phenomenon she calls the "soft unsubscribe," where emails are automatically filtered into obscurity. Acknowledging the value of genuine engagement, Kristina encourages her remaining 200+ subscribers to maintain a robust and interactive relationship, inviting them to provide feedback directly through email replies. She expresses her commitment to delivering content that resonates with her audience, conceding that if her work does not connect a chord, she is prepared to part ways amicably. Kristina concludes with a personal sign-off, reiterating her dedication to her craft and her readers.

Opinions

  • Kristina views the act of unsubscribing as a significant personal and professional setback.
  • She perceives the "soft unsubscribe" as a passive-aggressive form of disengagement, potentially more hurtful than an outright unsubscribe.
  • Kristina values quality over quantity in her subscriber base, prioritizing meaningful connections over mere numbers.
  • She actively seeks feedback from her readers to foster a two-way communication channel.
  • Kristina is willing to accept when her content may not align with a reader's interests and is prepared to let them go if necessary.
  • Her ultimate goal is to cultivate a healthy, engaged community of readers who find true value in her work.

My Knife-To-The-Heart-Moment As A Writer

It’s a notification you dread seeing. It’s an awkward moment.

You work so dang hard to get readers ON your list, it really hurts to watch them go.

Still, do you know what’s worse?

The so-called soft unsubscribe.

This is when a subscriber has most likely created a filter in their inbox that sends your emails to a dusty folder.

To all my subscribers, I don’t want you to unsubscribe to my list, but if you can relate… well, then I can’t offer you anything of value and I have to let you go.

To all 200+ who find my emails helpful:

my goal is to have a strong, healthy relationship with you.

So please, feel free to reply to my emails and give me feedback!

With writing love,

Kristina
