My Journey to $1 on Medium in 13 Steps (From Scratch)

Hello everyone, let me take you through my journey towards earning my very first dollar on Medium. How it all started and how I managed to write more consistently.

1. Initially, I was just a reader on Medium for more than a year, as I was keen to know about many different things people wanted to share.
2. I always tried to understand other writers’ methodology and tried to go to the depth of their niche, so that I could perceive the meaning of what I read.
3. Now, I wanted to start writing, but finding a subject or topic to focus on is the most difficult thing when you start your writing journey.
4. Then, my brother, Vrushal (a brilliant writer), suggested me to just start writing, and don’t worry about the niche at the beginning. He told me “the more you write, more ideas will come to you automatically.” And then, you will eventually end up finding your favorite topic.
5. So, I started writing about the numerous things which I find useful in my daily life and wanted to share with others. Have a look at my first 5 stories here,
6. However, as per the Medium Partner Program (MPP) policy, you can’t start earning if you have less than 100 followers, so after writing 5 stories on the platform I immediately started focusing on gaining more followers just for the sake of applying to this program.
7. Here’s the 5 steps I followed to gain my first 100 followers genuinely and as quickly as possible,

• Read and clapped on other writer’s stories,
• Commented on stories and engaged with writers, and followed them if I really liked their work.
• Followed some good writers and asked them (in comment) to check out my articles as well,
• Joined couple of Facebook groups to promote my stories with other readers and writers.
• Promoted on social media, Whatsapp, Linkedin, twitter, Instagram, etc.

8. On the side, I was writing other stories and saving them as a draft, just to publish it after applying to the MPP.

9. Once I reached to the mark of 100 followers, I was eligible for MPP and applied immediately. Note that this program is only available in few countries as of now.

10. My followers kept rising by the time, because I was reading stories and engaging with writers actively.

11. Then, I published more than 5 stories within the span of two weeks, making sure all stories have quality content to attract more readers. Promoted all stories on social media platforms to perform better.

12. Medium’s SEO helped me to gain more views on my posts, considering the keywords I have added before hitting that tiny little PUBLISH button.

And that’s how after 3 weeks of my first article, I was able to earn my $1 on Medium, and now, I am more focused on writing quality content than quantity. Which will eventually help me to attract more readers in the long run. Remember, this is not a get rich quick scheme. You must have patience and your earning curve will gradually climb up.
