My Journey Back from PTSD

Does time really heal all wounds?

They say time heals all wounds, but for those of us who’ve grappled with PTSD, time feels more like a warped mirror, reflecting the trauma in fragmented pieces, each shard a trigger, a flashback, a stolen breath.

For me, PTSD was a battlefield in my mind. The constant hypervigilance, the paralyzing fear at every creak of the floorboard, the nightmares that bled into the waking world, painting my days in shades of terror. It was the weight of a past I couldn’t escape, a past that threatened to drown me in its relentless tide.

Regardless, the thing about PTSD is that it’s not a life sentence. It’s a battle, yes, but one we can fight and win. My journey back wasn’t linear, it was a labyrinth of stumbles and breakthroughs, paved with the following hard-earned lessons:

Acknowledge it. Ignoring the trauma only empowers it. Acknowledge its presence, and its pain, but remember, you are not defined by it. You are the warrior, not the wound.

Find your anchor: What grounds you? For me, it was nature, the rhythmic crash of waves, the smell of pine needles, cold fresh air, colourful butterflies. Find your anchor, a place of solace that brings you peace, a reminder of the calm amidst the storm.

Challenge the negativity: PTSD whispers lies, telling you you’re broken, unworthy. Challenge those whispers. Practice self-compassion, reframe negative thoughts, and celebrate your victories, no matter how small.

My journey wasn’t easy. There were days I wanted to give up, days the darkness felt all-consuming, but then I’d remember the sunrise, the warmth of the sun on my face, the laughter of loved ones, my cute neighbour's toddler who likes to spend hours in my flat. These were the reminders that the world still held beauty, that joy still existed, and that I, too, deserved to experience it.

Today, the scars of PTSD remain, evidence of the battles fought and won. They no longer define me. I’ve learned to live with them, not be consumed by them. I find solace in helping others, sharing my story, and reminding them that even in the darkest moments, there is always a light, waiting to be found.

So, if you’re reading this, battling your own demons, know this: you are not alone. Nothing is new about your experience. Someone else had been there and won. There is hope, there is healing, and there is a future waiting for you, brighter than the scars you carry. Take that first step, seek help, and remember that even the darkest night eventually gives way to dawn. Your journey back to the light has already begun.
