My highest earning month on News Break
Two months after losing base pay, I hit my highest earning month on News Break.
This is how it happened..
Being smart about the news stories I write
What it all boils down to is the kind of content you produce.
I lost my base pay two months ago and at the same time, I learned about a top News Break writer making $17,000 per month with access to all the same tools and resources as me.
He was fellow News Break writer.
No special contract.
No negotiated rate.
He was just writing his stories in a really smart way.
I was new to writing news stories and up until this point, I mostly wrote about what was happening in my city, upcoming events, restaurant openings, and restaurant reviews.
When I shifted my focus on the kind of content I was publishing, my income started to shift too.
The first month I did this I earned very close to the initial base pay that was set by News Break.
The second month which was last month in October, I had my highest earning month, making nearly two times the most recent base pay News Break writers were earning.
My current style of writing on News Break
What I realize is that the perfect blend of clickworthy headlines and juicy newsworthy content that readers want to learn about is what’s getting clicks.
The more clicks and views I get on my stories, the more money I make.
I studied the kind of news stories that were going viral on News Break and learned this:
- Crafting clickworthy titles is key
- Writing about content that’s not the news can get high views too
- Current events always wins
- The more you write, the more you can potentially earn
Clickworthy (not clickbaity) Titles
Clickbaity titles fool you don’t they?
If you do them in smart way, you can get your reader to click your article and still provide the substance in your article that they’re looking for.
When I refer to the term clickbait, I really mean using an enticing title that will attract attention.
I tend to use questions as my headline.
I try not to give away the answer in the title to entice the reader to click the story.
And I always make sure that my story backs up the title headline.
Non-newsworthy stories
If I’m being frank, I hate writing about the news.
I’m no journalist but I’ve been writing with News Break for a year now and I started because I wanted to embark on this challenge.
I mostly write news-related content on News Break but every now and then I’ve had success writing about other stories.
I noticed that stories about topics like the shiny side of aluminum foil and flight attendant secrets were going viral so, I wrote an article about Costco and got some good traction.

I’ve also written about saving money, free cable TV providers, and other topics and have gotten tens of thousands of views.
These are not the bulk of my stories but it’s nice that I can write about topics like this from time to time and still see some success.
Focusing on current events
Most of my stories are based on current events.
Writing about the pandemic, changes in the economy, politics, local trending stories like the winter storm that hit Texas this past February are some topics I cover.
I go to Twitter for inspiration and follow my favorite news channel websites to stay abreast of changes happening in my city.
The more you write, the more you earn
More stories can definitely earn you more but, you don’t have to kill yourself writing dozens of stories per month.
I actually write a lot less now than when I had base pay and I make way more.
Writing longer stories is the key, though.
If your stories are at least 600 words, that’s the sweet spot News Break is looking for.
I use quotes, embeds from Twitter and Instagram, YouTube videos and other media to make my stories as interesting as possible.
That, along with focusing on longer content length can help you earn the most possible on News Break.
While I can’t reveal the exact amount News Break paid me, I hope the hints I popped up earlier in this writing have shed some light.
