My Health Is My Wealth Series (Part 2)
A short blog that explores how the immune system impacts our stress level

This is the second segment of the My Health Is My Wealth Series. In this series, I will explore how our immune system may impact our stress levels. I was in my early twenties when I became more serious about my health.
I assumed because I was young, I would always feel great. I really started monitoring my intake and lifestyle choices and how they impacted my stress. I had several aha moments, nothing major, but I realized if I wanted to feel better, I would have to take better care of myself.
I did not realize I was stressed out, and I thought I was managing my life well. Life happens to everyone, and how we choose to manage the life we have impacts us one way or another.
One of the most significant ways stress affects our health is by weakening the immune system. Chronic stress can suppress the immune response, making us more susceptible to infections and illnesses.
Furthermore, stress can contribute to the development of various chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. It can also exacerbate existing health issues, making their management more challenging.
The first step in reducing stress is recognizing its sources. Identifying the root causes of stress allows us to address them directly. Whether it’s work-related pressure, relationship problems, or financial worries, acknowledging these issues is the initial step toward finding solutions.
I decide daily what will get my energy and if it’s a major concern or something that really does not matter. Implementing strategies that work for the season, I’m in for what works for me. Each person has to choose peace over pettiness, stress, or a strategy. I’m all for practical and holistic measures as well.
Implementing relaxation techniques into our daily routine can significantly reduce stress levels. Techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, and yoga have been proven to lower cortisol levels, the hormone associated with stress.
Regular physical activity is another powerful stress reducer. Exercise releases endorphins, which act as natural stress relievers and mood enhancers. Additionally, maintaining a balanced diet and ensuring adequate sleep are crucial in managing stress and improving overall health.
Social support plays a vital role in stress reduction. Talking to friends, family, or a mental health professional about our concerns can provide emotional relief. Building a strong support network creates a sense of belonging and security, reducing feelings of isolation and stress.
Practicing mindfulness and living in the present moment can also alleviate stress. Engaging in activities that bring joy, such as hobbies, art, or spending time in nature, can provide a much-needed mental break from daily stressors.
Lastly, it’s essential to learn to say no. Setting boundaries and not overcommitting ourselves can prevent overwhelming stress. Taking time for self-care is not selfish but necessary for maintaining good health.
Ultimately, decreasing stress is not just a luxury but a vital investment in our overall well-being. By addressing stress through various strategies like relaxation techniques, exercise, social support, mindfulness, and self-care, we can significantly improve our health. Prioritizing stress reduction is not only a gift to ourselves but also to our loved ones, who benefit from our improved physical and mental health.
