My Happiness Hacks: Seven Easy Steps I’m Taking to Start Living My Best, Happiest Life

Join Me on My Road To Happiness

Happiness is something you can cultivate in your life, rather than something that happens to you. The question is, how do you go about doing it? We’re frequently told that happiness is a choice. The answer may appear to be as simple as “just be happy,” but it is not as simple as that. For many people, including myself, who come from traumatic and abusive backgrounds, happiness takes time and effort, and while the first step is always the most difficult, once taken, the rest becomes increasingly easier. I’ve finally realised that I can live my happiest life right now. I don’t have to wait for the perfect moment or for things to start going my way — I can create happiness right now. Here are some of the things I’m doing every day to begin living a happier life.

1. Eating well

To begin with, I have started eating healthily. Eating well is one of the simplest ways to increase happiness, especially if you consume a variety of fruits and vegetables daily. I have started controlling my portions and eating more complex carbohydrates (whole grains, beans, and legumes). These help to improve your mood and lower your risk of developing mood disorders like depression. If you have a mood or personality disorder, a medical condition, or are going through a difficult time in your life, eating well is especially important. Many people who frequently experience mood disorders are predisposed to obesity, and dieting may be ineffective because feeling good requires the right amount of nutrients.

2. Exercising regularly

I’ve also made regular exercise a part of my daily routine. Regular exercise is one of the most effective ways to feel better, stay healthy, and boost your happiness quotient. Exercise can reduce stress and improve mood, focus, concentration, and sleep. It is especially important if you suffer from mood disorders such as depression or anxiety. Exercise is something you can do on your own; you shouldn’t feel obligated to do it or feel guilty if you don’t, so try not to overdo it and become stressed about it. Something as simple as going for a walk can be considered exercise. I try to exercise in a way that makes me happy, and I’m seeing good results.

3. Connecting with people I care about

Humans are often most fulfilled when they interact with those they care about, so this one should come as no surprise. But it’s true: the more time I spend with the people I care about, the happier I am. When I have free time, I spend it either talking on the phone with a loved one who lives far away or visiting a loved one who lives nearby. This has significantly improved my mood, and I am grateful for the ability to communicate and spend time with family and friends.

4. Learning new things

I become more open to opportunities to broaden my mind as I learn more. One of the best ways to increase your happiness level and maintain your youthfulness is to try new things. You can learn new things in a variety of ways, and doing so doesn’t have to cost much money or time. I frequently watch educational videos, go to educational events, take classes, read books, and experiment with new hobbies. The secret is to learn something new that you are passionate about and that piques your interest. You might be pleasantly surprised by how much you like it and how much it helps you grow as a person. This is particularly true if you want to discover your passion. I have certainly discovered a passion for writing and interacting with other writers here on Medium.

5. I have discovered my passion and am pursuing it with zeal

Many happy people pursue their passions and use them to make a positive difference in the world. You don’t have to be a doctor, lawyer, or famous to make a difference — you just have to do something you love and are passionate about. Pursuing my passion has brought many benefits, including feeling accomplished and delightful dopamine rushes. It gives me more free time because I feel like I have a purpose other than work and responsibilities. You don’t have to follow your passion exactly, but you can use it as a guide and make a conscious effort to improve yourself, explore new ideas and interests, and meet new people.

6. I occasionally take a break.

Many people believe that if they want to be happy, they must continue to push themselves and work hard. While this is true in some cases, it is also important to take regular physical and mental breaks from our daily lives. A break from your routine does not have to be as long as a vacation. It could be as simple as going for a walk around the block or going for a drive because you have nothing pressing to do. Getting away from my normal surroundings and thoughts gives me a new perspective on life and allows me to relax and unwind. It also assists me in making better decisions when I return to my routine.

7. Practicing Gratitude

There will always be things in your life that you dislike. Sometimes it’ll be your job, sometimes it’ll be how others have treated you, and sometimes it’ll just be something you have to do. Practising gratitude is always a good idea. Gratitude for all the good things in my life and the lessons I’ve learned from adversity makes me feel better about myself and happier. I don’t put much time into it either. I simply take a moment to reflect on something I’m grateful for and consider how it makes me feel. That minute is spent thanking God for what he has given me. If any negative memories come to mind, I make an effort to reflect on the lessons I took away from them and the extent to which my Creator assisted me in overcoming them. I feel more content knowing that there is a higher power to whom I can always turn for guidance and that I am loved no matter what happens in the future.

Finally

I hope that my search for happiness will inspire others, even if it only makes a small difference in someone’s life. Life experiences have shown me that happiness is a choice. Regardless of our circumstances, we can choose how we respond to them. When I reflect on my journey and how far God has brought me, I realise that my happiness has come as a result of courage, perhaps even the courage to be disliked. We only have one life. I hope and pray that we can all choose to be happy and have the courage to pursue our dreams and passions, the things that truly make us happy. Whatever you decide to do with your life, I hope happiness is one of your choices :)
