My Goals For 2020. My Goals… Not Yours

Well… maybe a goal for you as well. Why hog all the good goals?

Look, I’d love to write your New Year's goals for you. I really would. But I don’t know you that well and, frankly, it’d be a disservice to you. I mean, do you really want to watch every episode of The Simpsons without blinking?

Neither do I, but I received a case of Visene for Christmas and it would be a shame to let it go to waste.

Don’t panic. This isn’t an advice piece or a lifehack article or anything like that. It’s merely a transcribing of my personal and professional goals for the new year.

My goals, not yours.

Maybe they could help inspire yours.

To be honest, some of yours have already inspired me.

And if you’re asking yourself why you should be reading this, you can, at the very least, skip ahead to the end for a special goal and wish for you. It’ll be something to think about.

Let’s get underway.

Writing and Career Goals for 2020

  • I will write every single day. Ideally, I will also improve my writing each and every day.
  • I will try to publish something every day. That said, I will not publish something that I believe is unfit for publication. Quantity is good. Quality is better.
  • I will continue honing my nonfiction writing, but also will continue writing poetry and short fiction from time to time.
  • I will hack the perfect and most productive work routine — be it an early morning routine or a night owl one. I will find the one that works best for me.
  • I will continue to educate myself about social media and marketing. Heck… I will continue to educate myself about everything.
  • I will get paid for my writing more often than not. By the end of the year, I will be paid well. Yes, I write because I love writing, but I also love being able to provide for my family and freelance layout just isn’t cutting it anymore.
  • I will have completed or nearly completed my career shift from freelance layout work to freelance writing as my main source of income.

Personal Goals

  • I will be a better husband and father. I’m told that I’m pretty good at it now, but I believe I could always be better.
  • I will cherish every moment, waking and sleeping, with my son. I love being the first person he sees in the morning, and often the last before he goes to bed. It’s a bit selfish of me, sure, but I think we all need to be a little selfish sometimes.
  • I will likewise cherish every waking and sleeping moment spent with my wife. She’s my hero and I’m super lucky to have her in my life. I love her endlessly.
  • Financially, I will arrive at a place where I’m no longer scrounging for coins the day before payday. I will be someone who is actually prepared for a sudden emergency expense.
  • This year — sooner than later — I will once and for all be able to get all of our plumbing issues resolved, fix the washing machine and dishwasher, and get my old junker out of the driveway.
  • I will get past my personal blocks and hang-ups.
  • I will continue my daily meditation practice.
  • I will continue to improve my health. I made some major advances this year. Let’s keep that momentum. Here’s to living forever!

Finally…

  • By the end of each day, I will have made the world a better place than it was the day before. It may be in a very small way, but it will be something.

All together now

The prophet Brian taught us that we are all individuals. That we are all different. And that we’ve got to work it out for ourselves.

He was correct two out of three times. Blasphemy, I know.

But I don’t think we need to work it out for ourselves. Not alone.

Instead, I believe we can all work it out together.

And that, dear friends, unseen and not-yet-met, is my wish and goal for you.

This year we will all work it out together. Not simply because we’re all in this together, but because it also seems like the right thing to do.

Cheers!
