MY Fried Brain on Medium
It's not just a favorite pastime, but a reckoning!
Every morning when I get up, I grab my mug and fill it with hot tea and take my spot in my well-worn recliner and turn on my phone. I check Google news while secretly praying Zelensky is still alive and read the headlines that get my attention and by this time, I’m ready to go reheat my tea and check my emails.
I read through a bunch of bs and then I search Medium to see if I'm a millionaire yet. The next is to see if there is any feedback on my stories/articles. And when I'm totally sure I'll have to continue my night job, I go to the top of the page to see if any of the authors I obsessively follow; because they inspire me; have published something new. I do this routine because I don’t want to waste my time reading something that just doesn't appeal to me.
I also do it for another reason. In the usual feed, I’ll scan roughly, and if there is a catchy title, I’ll give it a read. And if it is well-written or suspenseful, or meaningful, I’ll go to their feed and ponder further. It is that assessment that will either YELL hit the follow button or move on. But here’s the thing about those. After engaging, I may actually get a message that says… You did not follow me, or You didn’t read at all and a few comments with 4 letter words I'll leave out. This actually is rude to me. It makes me want to go outside and scream and throw rocks in the horse pasture! No, not really but it’s a good stress-buster anyway! Then I take a bathroom break.
When you first get on Medium, I’m sure it's fair to say that we all wrote hard to get our first 100 followers. Occasionally a story will pop up that catches my eye from a source where I had no idea where it came from, but I’ll entertain that read to help them get the first 100. Those are the ‘God wants you to help’. The next step I touch upon is the articles that say… If you want a viral story, read this! Or the… here are ten things you need to know to make $1000.00 on Medium, or here are really good points to make you're writing sell and etc. I actually ignore those, unless a title is there that cues my curiosity and I’ll entertain those.
Another thing is I’m always a sucker but unless the first paragraph tells me something I didn't know before, then I'm pretty much done at that point. I started writing because it has been a dream of mine since high school. Articles stories poems plays all grabbed my attention more than extra curriculum activities! I have yet to become engaged with advice that I feel will make my ideas go viral. It’s at that point that I go to the fridge and get a Sprite.
I hope I can make it big. I hope I can get that one piece that will make me famous, but my writing is my writing. It comes from my heart, not from my empty wallet. I'm not one for workshops. I figure that since I've got the stuff in my head to get out there and be chosen by Medium platforms, then I am doing something right. I'm not bashing workshops, they just are not my thing. As long as I'm getting guidance from my faithful followers like Colleen Millsteed and Jason Morton and Britt Blomster Lisa Gerard Braun, that says more to me than I can express!!! So I just want to say thank you to them!
Last but not least, I start working my brain on new ideas that will turn into great articles or stories and get busy! Then I grab another pack of cigarettes!
