Abstract

The author narrates a personal journey that began with collecting hockey cards and evolved into a profitable side business. Starting in 1993, they transitioned from simply collecting to buying, selling, and trading, becoming a fixture at card shows with their own table. The advent of the internet, particularly platforms like AOL and CompuServe, allowed them to capitalize on the market by purchasing cards cheaply online and selling them at a higher price locally. Despite early missteps in investing profits, the author eventually made smarter financial decisions, contributing to their continued enthusiasm for the hobby. Over the years, they

This is the side hustle I will keep doing forever.

Up until about 1993, I had collected hockey cards, but then everything changed.

I started selling them on top of buying, collecting, and trading.

I was always the only kid with his own table at the card shows and I became hooked forever!

Add in the internet and…

It became something incredible.

I started online in the early 90s with AOL and CompuServe, and not many people were on there at all which had its pros and its cons.

The best part was that I could buy for pennies what sold for dollars here locally!

Big $$$ but…

Instead of investing, or re-investing it, I didn’t have the right mindset yet, so I would spend it on box after box of hockey cards, which isn’t the smart way to invest in hockey cards.

Eventually, I would smarten up and make much wiser moves over the years.

I would flip hockey cards, as well as collect them on and off throughout the years, up until the present, it’s still my favorite hobby and side hustle.

I’ve met so many people over the years, some I’ve lost contact with, and some are still friends to this day.

Here are some of my favorite accomplishments when it comes to hockey cards.

I’ve been part of many admin and mod teams over the years, first was the hockey card moderator on the now-defunct Sports Card Sheriff (Online Forum).

The second was being part of the admin team at the best hockey card group (at the time) on Facebook: Maritimes Hockey Card Buy, Sell, and Trade

We raised a ton of money (over 6 figures) for charity, and I met some amazing people there.

I’m the one on the right.

Another accomplishment that I’m proud of, is a set I completed that was very tough to put together.

It was part of my Team Canada hockey card collection that counted over 4000 different Team Canada cards.

Now I flip cards and only collect hockey cards from my favorite player, Sarah Nurse.

I have almost all cards produced for her, including this custom set.

Throughout all the different places I’ve sold hockey cards:

- Own Websites - Online Forums - Usenet Groups - Facebook Groups - AOL & CompuServe

The only two I still do, are the ones I love: eBay & Card Shows.

I’ve sold in a lot of different formats too:

- Packs - Cases - Boxes - Razzes - Box Breaks - Case Breaks - Mystery Packs

But now I stick to singles, that’s what I love best!

I’d like to dedicate this story to a really good friend of mine that I met through the hobby who passed away in February of 2021, Chris Bossy.
