Word Prompt Answers
My First Time In Snow Was Cold
From the Lackadaisical Melissa Challenge
This is in response to Melissa Gray’s fun word prompt for the Lackadaisical Melissa Challenge, which has a freedom like no other word prompt ever. Today’s random word is “frozen.”
I grew up in Monterey, CA, where it never snows.
When I was thirteen, my parents loaded up my brother and me and drove up to Lake Tahoe in January. Snow was in the forecast. My first snow!!
I couldn’t wait. Dad rented a cabin with lots of space inside and outside. It was cold, but I had gloves.
None of us had ever really spent much time in snow, and me and my brother had never been in snow at all!
There was snow on the ground when we arrived, but not too much. You couldn’t build a snowball, let alone a snowman. Kind of disappointing.
My mother and father were enjoying watching us from the porch near the warm cabin, smoking their cigarettes and staying warm.
My brother and I played in the snow. My brother started to make a snow angel but got snow in his eye (really?) and went inside. I was halfway done building my snowman without gloves. Not gloves for the snowman.
I had no gloves on!!
Soon, I looked up at my dad and started to run to the cabin. My dad looked at my hands, which had more white and blue hues than pink or red.
My dad came to me and rushed me inside, explaining the steps we were going to take: bathroom faucet with cold water, slowly going to warm. Never hot.
My mom stood there in shock, frozen like a deer in headlights.
I started to scream when my mom came to the bathroom, wanting to know if she should call an ambulance and if they would have to cut my hands off!
Thankfully, my dad remained calm and said I’d be okay; he could already see life coming back into my fingers. I was going to be okay.
But my hands felt frozen for almost an hour.
