My First Solo Travel Abroad

It Is Not so Difficult as It Seemed

I have traveled a few times already, fighting the global pandemic. It is a lot simpler than people think. The current situation should not hold anyone from traveling.

This was my first time traveling solo, and, on top of that, mass-media was spreading fear and propaganda. Everybody was telling me that I would end up in quarantine. I found out that the people providing unsolicited feedback don’t do proper documentation, but they like to have opinions.

I bought the plane tickets, and I had paid for the accommodation. Being my first travel abroad only by myself, I needed to be pay attention and to think of everything before departing.

Traveling alone abroad is a little different because you need to consider that you need to do everything by yourself.

Are you ready to read my list?

I printed all the booking confirmations to have them on paper. I had the plane check-in, the Booking confirmation, the negative test result, and travel information regarding what I need to do to get from the airport to the accommodation.

I did the proper documentation. I needed to be ready to do everything by myself. I prepared myself as if my phone broke, and I needed to do anything without it: no Google Maps, no internet, no plane app, no nothing.

I needed to know how to get from the airport to the accommodation without using the phone. I used the phone, but the printed papers were there as a backup, giving me a feeling of security.

I learned to pay attention and to ask for help. When I feel uncertain, I start asking the people around for directions. Even when I am 90% certain that I am right, I sometimes ask for help.

This skill helps me manage different situations.

I started to love to talk to strangers. Since I travel alone, I sometimes feel the need to talk to strangers. I cannot say that I had made new friends, but I had exchanged some words on the train and the plane with different people.

If I weren’t alone, I would not feel the need to talk to strangers. I am not the type that talks like TV, but I like to exchange a few words.

I learned to enjoy simple things. A good cup of coffee can do wonders. A smile received from a stranger can change my day. An incredible sunset can boost my energy. These kinds of small things make me happy. I am very proud of myself because I am capable of enjoying simple things.

Single rooms are more expensive. It’s cheaper to book a double room and split the bills than to rent a single place. I had paid 35 euros for a single room and 45 euros for a double one. I regretted I did not book the double room for the entire period.

Solo traveling gives me freedom. I love to make decisions and to do things by myself. I don’t mind group travels; I find them more comfortable. Since I have to do everything by myself, I need to pay a lot of attention. I love the liberty to decide everything by myself and suffer the consequences if I make bad decisions.

I learned to handle difficult things. Sometimes, it isn’t easy to make all the decisions by yourself and not to have a person to exchange ideas with. The good thing is that you don’t have to provide explanations when you do something wrong.

For example, I was about to miss the plane because I got on the wrong train. Two trains were coming on the same line, in a five-minute interval. The second one was going to the airport, and the first one was going in the opposite direction.

The first train had a 3-to-5 minute delay, but I didn’t know that. I thought it was my train and got onboard. Lucky me, I figured out I was wrong and took the right train to the airport.

I imagine it would have been challenging to handle this moment if I weren’t traveling alone.

I learned that I am not able to take clothes in my hand luggage for 5 days. I just can’t. I would struggle in vain; it doesn’t work for me. I’m not the type to change every three days; I don’t want to take merino wool T-shirts and wear them for a week… No, no. I prefer to get my clothes washed at a wash house. In the worst-case scenario, I can wash my clothes by hand.

I learned that solo traveling gets me out of my comfort zone. You cannot be comfortable when you need to do anything alone. Having always to pay attention and take care of myself makes me stay alert, and I love it.
