My First Months on Medium

A reflection of my experience writing on this platform

Since joining medium back in January, I have thoroughly enjoyed writing about the topics I enjoy. I had nothing against writing in the past, but I could immediately tell that I did not need to force myself to write about stuff like math.

However, while writing has been fun, I have found myself slightly absorbed with my statistics. Especially early on, it was extremely difficult to stay away from my stats page. I still do not understand why, but there is just something extremely satisfying about watching the bar graph for each day rise as more views accumulate. But, if there are any medium writers reading this, I can not stress enough that this is not the correct way to approach the platform. You realize that those views will stay the same or rise no matter what you do. Once that fact sinks in, be less inclined to check your stats so often. Now, I am not saying that checking the stats page is a sin or anything like that. Of course, there are benefits, such as the fact that you can track views for individual articles, allowing you to see which topics your viewers enjoy the most. All that I want to convey is that your purpose on medium should not revolve around the stats page.

So far, I’ve published 8 articles. I wrote 3 of them in January, and I wrote 5 of them in February. Interestingly enough, that article was not published in any type of publication, as I had no clue that those even existed. If you’d like to give it a read, I have attached it below.

As for followers, I currently have 147. I am quite happy with this number, more so I’d say than the number of views I have. But I am trying my best to also block out my focus on that number as well.

Final Thoughts

I have no bad things to say about my time spent on Medium. Although it has been tough to write consistently with school and all, I try to make time to write at least a few minutes here and there throughout the week. Also, I have to say that the quality of writing on this platform is incredible. During my free time at school or at home, I will read a couple of data science articles, and I always learn something new. By taking my initial reflections and experience, I hope to continue my boosting the quality of my writing.
