My First Month on Medium Answers this Question: Which Earn More, Long Stories or Short?

The answer may surprise you.

Here is one of the summaries of my first month on Medium!

When I first signed up to write, I decided to do an experiment. First, I wanted to know what types of articles did well, so I wrote 21 stories of different lengths, niches, styles, and title types.

Here are my results.

It really surprised me because everything I had read on Medium said that 7-minute articles did the best.

As you can see, it doesn’t seem like story length has a big impact on earnings. Of course, this is only one month in.

There are also many other factors that should be figured into the equation, such as a catchy title, tone, storytelling abilities, formatting, and so on.

Here is the summary of the top-earning articles.

Total member read time: 2 hours

New Plans for the Second Month on Medium!

Since some of my Shortform ones were top earners, I will probably be doing more short articles.

I will keep in mind that 21 articles is not a lot, and my earnings for longer articles may improve as my writing improves.

I don’t want my profile to be made up of only short stories, so I will probably cycle between 1 minute, 2 minutes, and 4 minute reads with an occasional 7+ minute read thrown into the mix.

This story was written during the first week of January 2021. Check back with me at the beginning of February 2021 to see my update on long vs. short stories and which are better earners.
