Summary

A writer reflects on their first month's earnings of $0.10 on Medium, emphasizing the importance of consistency and patience over immediate financial success.

Abstract

The author recounts the amusement of their teenage foster daughter upon seeing their modest earnings of ten cents from their first month of writing on Medium. Despite the small figure, the writer remains undeterred, focusing on the journey ahead. They acknowledge the prevalence of success stories about early curation and significant earnings, but stress that these should not discourage those who have not yet achieved such milestones. The writer draws a parallel to the selective narratives of achievers who share their triumphs without revealing the struggles they faced. With a belief in the unpredictability of success, the author likens their approach to writing on Medium to the accumulation of wealth in business, where early sales do not dictate long-term success. The author's earnings, though still minimal, are seen as a motivator for continued hard work and a testament to the power of consistency. They encourage other writers to value the regularity of their progress over the immediate figures they see.

Opinions

  • The author views their initial earnings as a motivational starting point rather than a setback.
  • Success stories of immediate curation or high earnings should not be a source of discouragement for writers who are yet to experience similar achievements.
  • There is an opinion that achievers often share their successes without acknowledging the challenges they encountered along the way.
  • The author believes that success in writing, much like in business, cannot be predicted by early outcomes and requires patience.
  • Consistency and determination are considered more important than immediate financial gains in the pursuit of writing success.
  • The author's perspective is that small, consistent efforts can lead to significant achievements over time, using the metaphor of drops forming an ocean.

My First Month $0.10 As a Writer Is My Motivator

It is not about the figure; it is about consistency

I can’t forget in a hurry how my teenage foster daughter laughed when she saw my first month earning as a writer on Medium.

My first monthly earning was $0.10. Did I mean ten cents? Yes! I mean 10 cents. But that didn’t deter me. In fact, I didn’t see the figure either. I refused to be discouraged by what I saw because I am heading somewhere.

There are lots of articles flying on Medium about how writers got curated in their first article. This should not be a source of discouragement to any when you have written your 30th and yet no curation. If ‘not getting curated’ is an achievement, we will find thousands of articles from writers about not been curated.

Like I have always say, the problem with achievers is that majority of them are quick to tell the world how they climb stony mountains; barefooted. But they won’t tell the world how many toes they lost in the process.

I have also read articles on Medium about writers who made fortunes in a few weeks or days after joining the publication. It is also possible. But I believe everybody will not hit the jackpot at the same time.

“You can’t predict a good business from the morning sales.”

Yes! I believe in this wise saying. I am in my morning on Medium. If I had a low view count in the morning, it might raise straight away in the afternoon. But I hope that better days will come during the evening.

It’s been weeks now on Medium, every day, my daughter comes to peep into my stats. She marvels at the progress and tries to find out the magic behind the progress.

There is no special magic. The count still drops, I mean the ten cents. But I work hard daily to produce articles to make sure it doesn’t stop dropping.

Drop by drop, an ocean is formed.

This is a game of patience and determination. I don’t look at the drops anymore. I am not weighed down by the figures. I look at the consistency of the drops and I work towards it on a daily basis.

My ten cents is my motivator. It is pushing me to work harder so that it will continue dropping.

Do not look at the figures in your starts. Look out for its consistency.
