Summary

The author, a science student, experienced strange occurrences, such as feeling pulled when returning to their room after using the bathroom, which they couldn't logically explain.

Abstract

In this personal account, a science student preparing for engineering entrance exams in a reputed school in Visakhapatnam shares their experiences with unexplained phenomena in the hostel. Initially, the author remains skeptical and maintains a practical outlook, but after feeling continuously pulled while returning to their room from the bathroom in the middle of the night, they become terrified and seek answers from the warden. The warden reveals that a few students had attempted to contact spirits using a Ouija board in a locked room, leading to these events. The author decides to return home until the rest of the students come back, and upon their return, they learn that several other students have had their own haunted experiences, which they couldn't explain scientifically. The author emphasizes that their intention is not to prove the existence of spirits or convince anyone to believe in their story, but merely to share their personal experience.

My First Ever Encounter With Beings From The Other Dimension

When I used to come back to my room, I felt someone was pulling me from behind.

Do you believe in beings from the other world? Have you felt the presence of some other beings when you are alone?

I have always been practical in my life. Anything that happens, I always try to find logic to justify the incident. And yes, this annoys my superstitious Indian mother but that’s what I used to believe. Until I felt something I didn’t have the answer to.

I did my high school at a reputed school, spread across 1.5 acres, in Visakhapatnam, the steel city of Andhra Pradesh (a state in India). The massive school was situated near the international airport and a Muslim graveyard.

I was sent to school to prepare for the entrance examinations to the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) institutions, India’s premier engineering colleges. As a result, because the IITs were modelled after MIT, admission to the institution is a herculean task.

The entrance exams for the IITs are considered to be one of the toughest in the country. Every year, over 1 million candidates apply, out of which only approximately 10,000 are admitted to the 23 IITs.

I also aspired to be an IITian. As a result, I enrolled in a school that prepared students for exams and also had a hostel with strict rules — no outings, no cell phones, strictly sleeping by 10 p.m., and so on. We used to call it a prison.

You might already be aware of the fact that India has a population of 1.3 billion people. Hence, competition is always there, even in getting into great schools. Hence, doing well in school means getting into the best college that will help me build a career. Or at least, that’s what I thought at the time.

Little did I know that this school hostel had hidden secrets that I was not prepared for.

The hostel housed as many as 1000 students, divided into two houses: the junior house and the senior house. The juniors were allotted to use rooms from 200 to 399, while the seniors were given rooms from 400 to 599.

Room number 521 was always locked, and when I and my friends enquired about it from the hostel caretaker, he always gave vague answers. We used to live in room number 520.

There was also an old Muslim graveyard near the north side of the hostel. Several people have felt the presence of something inhuman on the 4th and 5th floors. I always used to think, like every Indian hostel, these were just rumours.

The seniors hung out together and were not allowed to enter the junior’s hostel except for dinner time, when we would eat with them. We had our meals together in a huge dining hall, with one side of the dining table reserved for the seniors.

We were all instructed not to look at the seniors, and we were strictly made to focus on our own meals while we ate. The “no looking” rule was extremely restrictive, and it was difficult for us to eat and observe their behaviour simultaneously. This is how my first year went.

However, strange things started happening when I was in my second year.

A student had committed suicide for reasons unknown. Some speculated he was having a tough time studying so immense that he couldn’t handle the pressure while others said he was depressed due to the breakup he had, while some claimed that he saw things.

Hence, a police investigation started with the school authorities and a bunch of students. While the other students were given a 2-week holiday since several of them were panicking. Perhaps, they saw people hanging from the ceiling only in movies or television shows and not in reality.

My home was 2500km away from the school hostel, I decided to stay back when all my roommates went home. I thought after 2 weeks I had to return, there was no point in going home. I was alone

What could go wrong?

Every night in the hostel, the authorities would switch off the lights to ensure that every student go to bed and only the ceiling fans would operate. I often used to sleep when the light switched off.

But there have been days when I need to go to for taking a leak, mostly around 3 a.m. in the morning. I had to walk almost 100 metres to reach the bathrooms.

No matter how brave I was at the time, walking through the dimly lit long corridor on some nights was daunting. In order to keep my mind off of eerie thoughts, I started counting the footsteps I used to take from my room to the bathrooms and vice-versa.

That’s when I started feeling strange.

The number of footsteps from the bathrooms to my room was always greater than the footsteps from the room to the bathrooms. When I was coming back to my room, I felt someone was pulling me from behind. For example, if I took approximately 450 steps to reach the bathroom, it would take over 530 steps to reach my room.

At first, I thought I was just imagining this and calculating it incorrectly. So, on the second night, I counted again, and the result was the same. I was confused. The third night, I took shorter strides to reach the bathroom and longer strides to reach my room, but still the count of the footsteps on my back was longer.

I was damn terrified.

The next day, I told the hostel warden about the bizarre incidents. At first, he laughed at me. He said I was cooking up stories. After confronting him on numerous occasions, he finally admitted that there had been some experiences felt by students.

The warden revealed that a few years back, some students tried to contact a spirit using a Ouija board in room 521, and after that, these things started happening. No student has ever been hurt by this. He still never explained why the room remained locked.

I decided to fly back to my home on the same day until the rest of the students came back. After 2 weeks, when I returned, I decided to not think about anything else apart from preparing for the exams.

So the night before the graduation, some of us decided to gather in the room late at night to discuss the haunted experiences we had in that hostel. Strangely, in the end, almost everyone knew that the place was haunted.

Some people had no unusual experiences. Everyone who shared had different stories until someone said something about the experience I had. When he walked back to his room down the corridor, he felt as if someone was dragging him back. I genuinely had goosebumps.

We were all science students prepping for one of the toughest entrance exams, but we didn’t have any scientific or logical explanation for those experiences.

Note: These were my personal experiences when I was 17. I would never argue with anyone about believing in me or whether or not spirit exists. I have never experienced anything strange since then.
