My First Curated Story In 77 Days — Persistence Always Pays Off

This is a story about ignoring success and failure and what it means to trust the process.

In February 2019, my path at Medium began. At that time, I only wrote an article now and then because I did not yet understand the platform correctly, and my focus was on writing my books.

From the very beginning, there was encouragement from Medium. Some articles of mine were curated. So I continued to write, but still somewhat irregularly.

From October to December 2019, I wrote an article every day for the first time. This increased my monthly income to over eighty dollars. My next goal was 100 dollars.

But from mid-November on, suddenly, none of my articles were curated anymore. This dry spell lasted for over five months.

In January and February 2020, I shifted back down a gear on Medium, because my next book had to be finished. But since March 2020, I have been writing and publishing an article every day again. March was the first month in which I earned over 100 dollars. This success I could repeat in April and May.

In the whole time, there was no further article curated by Medium. But a big part of my income I owed to the earlier curated articles. I felt that my income would decrease again if new, curated articles were not added regularly.

And that’s exactly what happened. In June 2020, I again earned significantly less than 100 dollars.

In the meantime, I had come to terms with the thought that I had ended up in curation jail for some reason or another. Nevertheless, I never thought for a second about reducing my engagement on Medium. Short-term results are irrelevant in the long run. What counts is stamina. At some point, I was convinced of this all the time, things had to start improving again.

Today, after 77 days, I received one of the much sought-after emails from Medium for the first time again.

If you write and publish every day, and nothing happens for 77 days, then you would certainly be willing to give up if you were only focusing on short-term successes.

But I didn’t give up when none of my articles were curated for five months, so I didn’t give up after 77 days.

Today I have been rewarded for that. I’m grateful for that, but don’t give it much weight. Maybe this time, it will take ten months until Medium selects one of my articles again. But perhaps it will be again tomorrow.

Whatever the case, I will use the time to expand my readership, increase my footprint on the platform, and improve my writing skills.
