On Writing

Overcoming Writer’s Block Was My first 2024 Writing Experience

Writer’s Block is frustrating but enriching at the same time

As of today, I have experienced the challenge of writer’s block for almost a month, right after my Christmas and New Year vacation.

It’s been an unproductive period as a writer, but now my batteries are recharged, and I’m finally ready to finish several books.

In addition, I am planning to resume my daily article on Medium, write my weekly article for digital newspapers, and give shape to my podcast project.

But what exactly is writer’s block, and how can we overcome it?

The psychoanalyst Edmund Bergler was the one who first described this condition in 1947 under the phrase “writer’s block.”

It is characterized by a temporary inability to generate new ideas, express oneself creatively, or make progress on ongoing writing projects. The writer may go through Short-term lapses in lack of creativity or motivation, just for a few days — more extended periods of anguish or inability to write, which can even last for years.

It can manifest itself in different ways: from a feeling of stagnation and lack of inspiration to paralyzing anxiety that prevents any attempt to write.

However, writer’s block is only part of the road for a creative writer.

One of the most notable examples is that of acclaimed author Stephen King. During the 1980s, King struggled with an alcohol and drug addiction that affected his ability to write.

He went through a period of creative block, during which he felt unable to produce new works, such as Stephen King’s “On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft.”

However, after rehabilitation and working on his recovery, King returned strong and wrote some of his most successful works, including “IT” and “Misery.”

Another inspiring example is J.K. Rowling, author of the famous Harry Potter book series.

It’s easy to forget that your favorite books were once a draft, an incomplete manuscript, a sliver of an idea conceived on a train. When you hold a book in your hands, you don’t often think of everything the author struggled through to get that book to you. It’s difficult to imagine a world in which a world-famous author struggles with something as common and human as writer’s block. On Twitter last week, J.K. Rowling opened a door to that world: admitting to the difficulties she faces every day as a writer.

These examples prove that writer’s block is not insurmountable and that even the most successful writers can face it at some point in their careers.

Writer’s Block Causes

You must proceed to look for the causes of your Blockage because, once well-defined, you will be able to get to work and finally begin to write. These are the six most common reasons you can suffer from Writer’s Block.

1. Find your ideal writing spot at home or a coffee shop. Design that particular place, which is a great enemy of inaction and Blockage.

2. Wait for the best time to write

My dear colleague, that moment does not exist. Any time is optimal; you have to start. When you take the first step, everything will come in a cascade. Remember the first time you learned to ride a bike? A few falls and then enjoy. Inspiration doesn’t come; you have to go out and look for it. Through sweat, tears, blood, and especially a lot of work, is how you become a writer. The muses thing is overrated.

3. Distractions

Put aside the cell phone, put aside social networks, and on the PC, have the window you are writing open. Otherwise, you will not advance, will surely stagnate, and fall into Blockage again.

4. Procrastination

The most powerful in the negative sense. The one that makes you postpone, delay, and lose your best moments. It is also overcome by doing, that is, writing.

If you put a price on completing your tasks, you will help yourself accomplish them. Suppose you bet a high figure with your partner or best friend if you don’t write. It is outstanding. And you will write more and save more money. It hurts a lot to lose money.

5. Keep your desk free and tidy.

I have been shocked to see how a simple measure is so powerful. A clear desk clears the mind and stimulates action.

6. Fear

Fear paralyzes. But it is expected to feel afraid. And fear disappears just by writing, now, later, and always. That’s why do it with small phrases. Understandable sentences, even if they are simple. Then, everything will go into a crescendo until you reach the Flow State.

7. Perfection

Perfection does not exist. We must accept that we are imperfect; the best way to deal with it is to live with it. But you can reach a similar state by repeating the action: writing and writing. After you have done it many times, you will notice that each time, you write better.

Final words

I wanted to transmit that writer’s block happens to everyone who writes. I navigated through the challenges of writer’s block.

Typically, it happens in the creative process. It’s okay to feel stuck sometimes.

An important strategy is to accept and acknowledge writer’s block rather than fight it.

If you feel blocked when writing, you can try drawing, painting, making music, or engaging in any other form of art that inspires you.

In my experience, taking a break from writing and spending time on activities I enjoy, such as walking outdoors, spending time with friends, or slowly relaxing, can be revitalizing and renewing.

Now, I want to reach my flow state as usual.

If I can do it, you too can do it. It is your time.
