My Favourite Poems and What They Taught Me

Life values I have crafted from literature

Poetry is one of my favourite forms of literature because it can express emotions, thoughts, and experiences, in a beautiful and powerful way. Poetry can also teach us valuable lessons, about ourselves, others, and the world. In this essay, I will share some of my favourite poems, and what they taught me.

One of my favourite poems is “Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night” by Dylan Thomas. This poem is a villanelle, which is a form of poetry that has a fixed structure and rhyme scheme, and that repeats certain lines throughout the poem. The poem is about the poet’s father, who is dying, and the poet’s urge for him to fight against death, and to live fully and passionately, until the end. The poem taught me to appreciate life and to resist giving up, even in the face of adversity and mortality. The poem also taught me to respect and honour the choices and wishes of others, even if they differ from mine. The poem also taught me to express my love and gratitude, to the people who matter to me, before it is too late.

Another one of my favourite poems is “Still I Rise” by Maya Angelou. This poem is free verse, which is a form of poetry that does not have a fixed structure or rhyme scheme, and that follows the natural rhythm and flow of the language. The poem is about the poet’s resilience and defiance, in the face of oppression and discrimination, based on her race, gender, and history. The poem taught me to be proud of who I am and to celebrate my identity and heritage, regardless of what others think or say. The poem also taught me to be strong and confident and to overcome the challenges and obstacles, that I encounter. The poem also taught me to be hopeful and optimistic, and to believe in the possibility of change and justice.

A third one of my favourite poems is “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost. This poem is a four-stanza poem, with five lines each, and a rhyme scheme of ABAAB. The poem is about the poet’s choice between two paths in a forest, and his reflection on the consequences of his decision. The poem taught me to be adventurous and curious and to explore the different options and opportunities, that life offers. The poem also taught me to be responsible and accountable, and to accept the outcomes and effects, of my actions and choices. I learned to be creative and imaginative, and to wonder and speculate, about the alternative scenarios and possibilities, that could have happened.

These are some of my favourite poems, and what they taught me. Poetry is a wonderful and enriching form of art, that can touch our hearts and minds, and that can inspire and educate us. I encourage everyone to read and enjoy poetry, and to discover their own favourite poems, and what they can learn from them.
