My Favorite Way to Pass Time

January Six Word Photo Story Challenge: “Self”

Reading. The perfect way to relax.

A life-long reader, I embrace all forms of reading, physical book, ebook, audiobook — even the back of a cereal packet will do in an emergency.

Travel reading organization was always problematic. Books don’t take up a lot of physical space, but they weigh a ton — well, they do when you take eight books away for your two-week holiday.

I started with a system where I would take one or two of my favorite books for the plane, along with a bunch of throwaways, books I would only read once and would be happy to leave behind for another book lover to enjoy. Often the places we stayed had little nooks for “leave a book, take a book.” But sometimes, I wanted to bring books I thought were throwaways home. And on the return journey, I’d also have to fit in my shopping. Space was at a premium.

Kindle reading was a bit of a game-changer for traveling. On my first overseas venture with my Kindle, I also took four physical books. I had to hedge my bets. What if something went wrong and my Kindle failed?

The second time I went roaming overseas, I took a loaded kindle and two books. Having used my kindle overseas before, I was a little more confident; besides, suitcase space was super tight. We were traveling through six countries in three weeks and two different climates.

On the holiday above, to Koh Samui in Thailand, I made my bravest journey yet. The only reading material I took was my Kindle.

Now my Kindle has been replaced with multiple iPad reading and audiobook apps — Borrowbox, Overdrive, Audible, Libro.fm, iBooks, and Kindle. The downfall of the Kindle is it it isn't a multi-purpose device. And using the apps on my iPad allows me to borrow from the public library system in Western Australia — which is extremely helpful to my budget given how much I read!

Thanks for reading, Sandi xx
