My Favorite Side-Trip on Our Baseball Travels

You Can’t Go Wrong with Architecture, Nature, and Wine!

Until a few years ago, my husband and I traveled quite a bit. We lived in Mexico for nearly four years, traveled to Europe and Alaska, and cruised to the Maritime Providences and New England. One of my favorite ways to travel was to take a good old-fashioned road trip. Most of our road trips involved baseball destinations.

Health concerns and the luxury of watching baseball on high-definition television have hampered Judd’s desire to travel. Additionally, the pandemic and his health insurance forced us back to Minnesota. Now, I’ll be lucky to get him over to Target Field, but it’s still nice to conjure up pleasant memories.

My Favorite Baseball Road Trip:

About ten years ago, we loaded up the Cadillac and headed to Cleveland to watch the Twins take on the then Indians. We stayed with Judd’s sister, who lived in Cleveland then. When that series was over, we headed to Toronto. Crossing the Canadian border presented a variety of opportunities:

  • Architecture — In Toronto, we visited the CN Tower, which had 147 floors, and was the tallest building in the world until 2007. I was brave enough to wander onto the see-through observation deck for about three seconds, but my husband (a former paratrooper) just couldn’t do it. Then we took a side trip to Niagara on the Lake. Talk about a contrast. In this charming town, you’ll find endless Victorians with flower boxes spilling over and beautiful tree-lined streets.

  • Wine — As part of the Niagara Falls tour, we also stopped at the Niagara Winery. Judd stated he would never step foot in a winery. Well, he did, and he enjoyed it too, especially the ice wine. And he’s been to other wineries since.

  • Nature — And, of course, our leading destination other than the Roger Centre was Niagara Falls. I was expecting the falls to seem kind of cheesy. But, being a true Aquarian, I was pretty blown away by the falls. If you ever visit, you must take in the Maid in the Mist. Don’t quote me on this, but I think you even get to keep the blue poncho.

If you hit the road for baseball games or any other event, make sure to see what you might find nearby. The trip to Niagara was only about two hours from Downtown Toronto and well worth it.
