Summary

Grameen Bank, a Nobel Peace Prize-winning microfinance organization in Bangladesh, provides collateral-free loans primarily to women, fostering economic and social development through community-based lending and support for small-scale businesses.

Abstract

Grameen Bank, founded by Nobel Laureate Prof. Yunus, has revolutionized banking for the impoverished by offering small loans without collateral, a practice that earned it the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006. The bank's microcredit system operates on the principle of trust and communal responsibility, with loans disbursed to groups rather than individuals, ensuring a remarkable 98% repayment rate. The majority of borrowers are women, reflecting the bank's belief in their financial acumen and reliability. During a research internship in December 2012, insights were gained into the bank's operations, including the weekly collection of installments and the promotion of small-scale enterprises among borrowers to generate regular income and alleviate poverty. The internship also involved engagement with the Yunus Center, deepening the understanding of social business concepts and their societal impact.

Grameen bank is a bank for the poor started by Noble Laureate Prof Yunus in 1983. Prof Yunus and Grameen Bank were jointly awarded Noble Prize for Peace in 2006 for their efforts in creating economic and social development from below.

I had worked with Grameen Bank in December 2012 as a Research Intern where we had studied the Microcredit system at the Grass root level.

For the initial 2 weeks, we were in the Head office at Dhaka researched the microcredit department of the bank to understand functioning and impact on the lives of people. For the next 1 week, we stayed at the Branch office at a remote village where we attended center meetings and interacted with loan officers and borrowers.

And last week we worked with Yunus center and learned the concepts of Social Business and its impact.

Some of the key insights from my Internship at Grameen Bank are below:

  1. Collateral free loans

Grameen Bank has disbursed loans of 24 Billion to over 9 Million Borrowers. All these loans are given based on trust and without collateral. The strong Micro credit model of the bank has ensured the record repayment rate of 98%.

2. Groups Loans and weekly collection of installment

Loans are provided not to individuals but a group of 8–10 borrowers and it is the responsibility of the complete group to repay weekly installments. Each center has 10–12 such groups and center managers do weekly meetings and collect installments from borrowers.

3. Female Borrowers in the majority

Females can handle money better and that’s why 96% of borrowers are females. It has worked well for banks considering high repayment rates.

4. Loans for small scale businesses

Borrowers are motivated by Bank to start small scale businesses and loans are provided for the same which ensures regular income and coming out from poverty.
