My Experience at the Grand Palace in Bangkok

Thailand Diaries: Inspiring Travel Through Photography

The Grand Palace/ Credit: B.R. Shenoy

“Just studying Buddhism, then meditating and going to Buddhist monasteries, talking to Buddhist monks, combined with the Thai people themselves, changed the way I look at the world.” — John Burdett

As an avid traveler interested in different cultures, I enjoyed discovering the enchanting city of Bangkok, Thailand. It was my first time exploring this lively destination, and I was excited to learn its fascinating history and traditions.

Regrettably, despite our time living as American expats in Yokohama, Japan, during the mid-2000s, my family and I didn’t have the chance to visit Thailand. While Japan seemed like an ideal starting point for discovering the rest of Asia, the responsibilities and energy required to raise young children made extensive travel challenging.

Nonetheless, we could see quite a bit of Japan during that period. We also had the opportunity to travel to China, Guam, and Hawaii.

Fortunately, my sister, an American expat residing in Nichida, Thailand, recommended and accompanied my husband, son, and me on a visit to the renowned Grand Palace during our initial full day in Thailand in November 2023.

We visited the attraction on a pleasant Sunday morning, so seeing a large crowd of tourists at the palace was no surprise. Our experience could have been even better if the palace grounds weren’t so crowded.

At least, we were fortunate to enjoy unseasonably cool weather throughout our time in Thailand, according to the locals.

On a different note, many historical palaces, temples, and other important sites request that visitors cover their shoulders and knees. We were dressed appropriately, as we had prior experience visiting temples in various countries.

Rather than opting for a guided tour, we chose the self-paced multimedia headset audio tour, which proved to be just as effective. That said, I wish more information had been provided about the buildings, the monuments, and the significance and history of each site.

Per The Crazy Tourist:

“There are a staggering 40,717 Buddhist temples in Thailand and 33,902 of them are still in active use today. Thailand is a Buddhist country and the temples here play a very active part in everyday life. Thai’s come to them to pray to Buddha for things such as health or good fortune, they also come to make merit and speak with the monks.”

History of The Grand Palace

The Grand Palace in Thailand is significant in the nation’s history and cultural heritage.

Its origins date back to the reign of King Rama I, who was coronated in 1782.

Rama wanted to establish Bangkok as the new capital of Thailand and create a symbol of royal power and prestige. This prompted him to commission the construction of the Grand Palace.

Located on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, the Grand Palace was built using bricks from the ruins of Ayutthaya, the former capital of Siam (the earlier name of Thailand).

Ayutthaya was severely damaged during a war with Burma in 1767. Rama saw an opportunity to repurpose the ruins. He transported the bricks and materials from Ayutthaya to Bangkok using the Chao Phraya River. This expedited the construction while paying homage to the historical significance of the reclaimed materials.

Rama was inspired by the layout and design of the Grand Palace in Ayutthaya and wanted continuity with the past before beginning his rule from the new capital.

The Grand Palace served multiple functions besides being the royal residence. It housed government offices, monasteries, ceremonial halls, and other administrative facilities.

Throughout the years, successive monarchs expanded and enhanced the palace.

King Chulalongkorn, also known as Rama V, ruled Thailand from October 1, 1868, until his death on October 23, 1910, overseeing extensive reforms and modernization. He left a lasting impression on the country by further constructing buildings and solidifying royal power.

The Chapel of the Emerald Buddha is truly one of the most iconic landmarks of the Grand Palace. The Emerald Buddha statue is said to bring prosperity and protection to the kingdom. Carved from a single piece of jade, this statue holds a lot of religious significance and is highly respected by Buddhists all throughout Thailand.

Even with changes in leadership over the years, the Grand Palace has remained a symbol of Thai culture and national pride.

It’s amazing to think that even after the monarchy was abolished in 1932, the palace continued to stand as a reminder of Thailand’s incredible history and heritage.

Today, both locals and visitors from all over the world can come to explore the royal complex.

Please take a moment to enjoy these lovely photos I captured during our visit to the Grand Palace in November 2023.

Our Visit

The Royal Palace was indeed a marvelous site to explore. There was so much to see that it was difficult to know where to begin.

I was impressed by the size and vastness of the palace grounds, dotted with temples and other buildings. You could easily spend a day walking around and enjoying all the beauty.

We had a wonderful time strolling through the courtyard and admiring the landmarks of the palace complex. The gardens were immaculately maintained, and the exhibits provided exciting insights into art and culture.

The venue was filled with visitors eagerly taking photos from every corner. Beautiful, vibrant locations were all over, waiting to be captured. I couldn’t resist the urge to snap pictures everywhere as I wanted to preserve all the splendor for posterity.

It was a truly overwhelming experience.

Angkor Wat Replica

While not as large as the original Angkor Wat in Cambodia, this smaller replica in the Grand Palace is definitely worth a visit. It may be scaled down, but it still offers valuable insights into the history and early planning of the temple.

Constructed during the reign of Rama IV, when Cambodia was under Siamese control, it is situated near the Emerald Buddha temple. It can be easily missed amidst the vibrant surroundings.

Despite its unassuming appearance among the ornate buildings, the gray sand model manages to stand out and provides a unique contrast.

Hindu Mythology and Buddhist Traditions

The Grand Palace in Bangkok beautifully combines Hindu mythology and Buddhist traditions in architecture and artwork.

The entrance to the palace is guarded by statues of Yakshas, mythological protectors from Thai folklore, representing their important role in protecting sacred places. Inspired by Hindu epics like the Ramayana, these Yaksha figures showcase a cultural legacy that spans over 800 years.

The Ramakien epic, a Thai version of the Ramayana, is prominently depicted in the palace’s murals, illustrating the epic battle between King Rama and the demon king Tosakanth.

These murals show the lasting impact of Hindu culture on Thailand’s history and identity.

A blend of Chinese, Indian, and Western architectural and sculptural influences could be seen at the Palace.

Observing the different beliefs coexisting here, including Buddhism, Hinduism, Chinese gods, and Thai mythical creatures, was fascinating.

The palace grounds were breathtaking, and the artwork featured here was spectacular. Every corner displayed intricate details on statues, murals, walls, and windows.

We appreciated the intricate architecture of the beautifully ornamented temples, notably the charming sculptural figures of the blue and gold Chedi Demons safeguarding the golden shrine.

Strolling around the Palace and observing the monks in prayer was indeed a humbling experience.

We had the opportunity to visit the Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Kaew) and the Temple of the Reclining Buddha (Wat Pho) on the same day since they are conveniently located near each other. These famous landmarks are found in the historic heart of Bangkok.

The Emerald Buddha is a lovely sight to see despite its smaller size. Typically, visitors spend about 5 minutes viewing it, as there tends to be a constant stream of people waiting for their turn.

We spent about two hours exploring the entire Palace, though we could’ve easily spent longer.

Final Thoughts

If you could only choose only one attraction to see during your stay in Bangkok, visiting the Grand Palace should be it.

It truly offers a unique and culturally rich experience that gives you a glimpse into the royal lifestyle of the Thai royals.
