My Ex Had His Eye On Ruining My Credit — The Cold Black Heart Of Divorce

Trust is still tricky after 25 years

The neglected pile of ominous mail built on my counter. Divorce knocked the stuffing out of me regardless of whether I had chosen it. Brain fog prevailed. I robotically tended to Ian, my grandson, versus addressing any personal desires or needs.

Paperwork was not a priority.

Relearning to breathe mattered more.

I rifled through the envelopes as Ian happily ate cheerios in his highchair.

Curious about the balance owed on my Jeep, I opened the most recent statement out of several from the bank.

THREE MONTHS PAST DUE.

Classic red ink.

The account was in my name. Our divorce terms obligated him to the loan balance.

My ex told our kids that my credit was his to ruin.

Nice try.

After almost five years of rebuilding, I think I’m just fine.

My next Jeep will rock.

Stronger and better.

Just like me.
