Three Lessons learned from facing such crisis experiences in life

My email was hacked

On Tuesday the 6th of July 2021 at 5 AM I had just woken up. It was early morning and it was quiet and peaceful I rubbed my eyes.

My phone bell was ringing. My son called from the USA.

Hi mum, I know it is a bit early for you but your email has been hacked! What! Hacked? I asked! Ma listen carefully you need to take action quickly!

Before I could put down the receiver another call, then another, Oh my goodness my cousins, my friends, my well-wishers all alerting me.

Similarly calls from Australia and then Singapore, Canada, and lastly India because it was still early in the morning. Well all over! I hardly felt that I had been attacked by hackers!

I was more or less like a celebrity with phones buzzing away.

Concerns from people

I saw WhatsApp messages filled on my phone.! I had also received a mail-in to my other email account that said that Preeti needed a little help! This message had been sent to everyone from my contact list.

Some people were worried, some were genuinely concerned, some wanted to inform me and others offered suggestions for rectification.

One of my professional contacts actually replied to that email saying please tell me how may I help?

He received a reply with a demand to deposit some money in a bank account for a covid -19 patient for whom I was supposedly collecting money.

The reply addressed the letter to a Mr.Hind whereas his name is Niranjan. Hind was his business organization. Anyway, he called me and told me it was a heavily accented guy he spoke to because the man called him again.

He told the hacker that the matter had already been reported to the crime cell. After that, no phone came.

Many of my friends just ignored the mail as they were sure that the mail did not look as though they were written by me.

What steps did I take?

I took a few steps that everybody should be ready to do in such an emergency:

#1.Password change: I changed the email password of the affected account immediately. I had to change the password on my laptop and phone also because of the security leak.

#2.Informed cybersecurity specialist: I immediately informed a friend who was a cybersecurity specialist. He checked the system and found that the location from where it was hacked showed Nigeria.

#3. Sent emails to contacts: I sent mail to as many people as I could that if they had received a malicious mail that asked for money, they were to ignore it as it had been sent by someone posing with my name.

#4. Posted on social media accounts: I posted a message on Facebook and Instagram that some malicious person had sent an email to all my contacts that I needed money. I was fine and the mail is to be ignored. Lo behold people kept liking my picture and not reading the message.

#5. Changed all passwords where security leaks were observed: I spent the whole day changing all passwords that were sensitive and wherever security was compromised.

The three lessons learned from hacked Email

When my email was hacked the first thing is that my mind went blank and I mechanically picked up phones and answered the queries and concerns of people.

It was emotionally and physically draining on my energy. My nerves felt frayed and I felt tired. These are the three lessons I learned:

  • Remain calm and think clearly: I reminded myself that I was to be calm and cool. I smiled and then I could understand clearly what was to be done and I could take action immediately.
  • Be careful about sensitive data: We are always wise after the event. We should keep our passwords protected and passwords should not be common. They should be unusual.
  • Never update personal information unless the site is authenticated: Do not update any personal information without verifying the site. All the phishing is done on sites where personal information is being asked and people adhere to it.

I constantly receive emails and phone call requests from callers who I don’t know at all asking me to update information. These emails should be ignored. Be very careful about your personal data.

To conclude

Hacking emails are common everywhere in the world. I call the people who hack and take away the rights of genuine people bandits . They are robbers with quick rich formulas. They are ultimately caught in the act of cheating as the police is always after them.

The things to remember are to be calm when a crisis like an email hack happens to you. Just stop being devastated or you will not be able to think clearly. A fuzzy mind is not good to find solutions.

Be calm and sort out things step by step. Overcome a crisis situation by facing it bravely. Do not break down. Things will work out and slowly come back to the right position.

My life is fine now. I have sorted out things. Being calm helped me to be back on the right track. Stay motivated and stay inspired. Good luck and pray that no one faces a crisis situation like this.Stay motivated!
