The Disgrace Of Calvin Ridley
Atlanta Falcons wide receiver, Calvin Ridley, was suspended for one year because he gambled $1500 on football. That $1500 bet cost him the $11 million he was going to make next year. This is one of the first suspensions of its kind in the National Football League. In 1963, commissioner Pete Rozelle, suspended Green Bay running back Paul Hornung and Detroit Lions defensive end Alex Karras for the entire season for betting on football games.
The sports media has overwhelmingly said that Ridley placing bets compromises the integrity of the game. But does it really? Gambling on sports is now legal in the U.S. The only way that Ridley can compromise the integrity of the game is if he bet on his team while he was playing. That didn’t happen because he wasn’t playing this past year because of his anxiety. If he was betting on games while he was playing, that’s a whole other can of worms. He could purposely drop a ball or two that would affect the outcome of the score, but he didn’t.
If you want to suspend people, suspend the NFL owners who consistently refuse to hire Black people as head coaches. The minimum wage that owners pay cheerleaders should be up there as far as egregious acts in the NFL as well. I could go on and on. Free Calvin Ridley!
