Summary

Calvin Ridley, an Atlanta Falcons wide receiver, received a one-year suspension for betting 1500 on football games, forfeiting his 11 million salary, in a rare case of player suspension for gambling in the NFL since 1963.

Abstract

Calvin Ridley's suspension for betting on NFL games, despite not playing due to anxiety, has sparked a debate on the integrity of the game. While sports gambling is now legal in the U.S., the NFL maintains strict policies to prevent any potential compromise to the sport's integrity. Ridley's bet, although not involving his own team or games he played in, has been deemed serious enough to warrant a significant penalty. The suspension has also brought to light other perceived integrity issues within the NFL, such as the underrepresentation of Black head coaches and the low wages paid to cheerleaders, leading to calls for broader reforms within the league.

Opinions

  • The author suggests that Ridley's suspension may be disproportionate, as his bet did not compromise the integrity of games he was involved in.
  • There is a sentiment that the NFL's focus on Ridley's gambling is misplaced, considering other integrity issues within the league, such as the lack of Black head coaches.
  • The article criticizes the NFL for not addressing the systemic issues like the minimal wages for cheerleaders compared to the substantial financial penalties imposed on players for gambling.
  • The author expresses a strong opinion that the NFL should prioritize addressing its broader social and ethical issues, implying that Ridley's punishment is relatively minor in comparison.
  • The call to "Free Calvin Ridley" indicates the author's belief that Ridley's suspension is unjust or that the NFL's disciplinary actions are inconsistent.

The Disgrace Of Calvin Ridley

Atlanta Falcons wide receiver, Calvin Ridley, was suspended for one year because he gambled $1500 on football. That $1500 bet cost him the $11 million he was going to make next year. This is one of the first suspensions of its kind in the National Football League. In 1963, commissioner Pete Rozelle, suspended Green Bay running back Paul Hornung and Detroit Lions defensive end Alex Karras for the entire season for betting on football games.

The sports media has overwhelmingly said that Ridley placing bets compromises the integrity of the game. But does it really? Gambling on sports is now legal in the U.S. The only way that Ridley can compromise the integrity of the game is if he bet on his team while he was playing. That didn’t happen because he wasn’t playing this past year because of his anxiety. If he was betting on games while he was playing, that’s a whole other can of worms. He could purposely drop a ball or two that would affect the outcome of the score, but he didn’t.

If you want to suspend people, suspend the NFL owners who consistently refuse to hire Black people as head coaches. The minimum wage that owners pay cheerleaders should be up there as far as egregious acts in the NFL as well. I could go on and on. Free Calvin Ridley!
