My Day in Mexico City: Weekend Recap

From the sacred ceremonies of the ‘Danza de los Voladores’ to the rich, sweet taste of Mexican chocolate and the fascinating Oaxaca community bazaar and performance of Guelaguetza.

After the pandemic’s grip on our lives began to loosen, I couldn’t have predicted the vibrant and endless festivities that awaited me in Mexico City. When I look back on my first year here, it felt like a ghost town — everything was closed, and the streets were deserted. People put on masks, afraid to interact. However, this year was a stark contrast, brimming with cultural richness that left me awestruck.

If you’ve read my previous tales about the ‘Festive de Flores Verano’ or the indigenous bazaar at Zocalo, Mexico City, today, I’m excited to share my weekend adventure, which on Saturday coincided with Mexico’s Chocolate Day. The government decided to set up the chocolate bazaar and merge it with the mesmerizing ‘Danza de los Voladores’ performance. I’ve mentioned this dance before, and you can find this in tourist spots across the country. But this time, I witnessed the real deal — not that what you saw wasn’t real, but here, it’s a sacred ritual, not just a performance.

The ‘Danza de los Voladores’ is a breathtaking spectacle that carries profound significance in Mexican history. I had the privilege of observing their ritualistic blessings and mantra recitations, reminding me that it’s more than more than just a show.

And then, of course, there was the chocolate. The aroma alone was enchanting, and the taste… sublime. It was a sensory journey through Mexico’s rich culinary heritage, all in one tasty taste.

The adventure didn’t end there. The following day, I immersed myself in the Oaxaca community bazaar, where ‘Guelaguetza’ took center stage. While I had witnessed ‘Guelaguetza’ a few times before in places like Tlaxcala and Mexico City, I remained awestruck by each performance.
