My Connection with Hummingbirds

A couple of months ago I moved from home, my new place is at the other side of the city from the place I lived for the last twelve years. In my previous home, I had the constant visit of dozens of hummingbirds, the yard was small but they fluttered around me in a very peculiar way, they seemed not to be afraid of anything, they got used to my presence and the presence of my dog, becoming the “owners” of the garden.

When I was moving, I knew I was going to miss them. In my new home, the walls of the backyard are very high, and there are no flowers like in my previous garden, it is also so far away...

“How are they going to find me?” - I thought.

The move and the process of settling in my new house lasted a couple of weeks, and no day did I see a single hummingbird nearby, neither butterflies nor bees. My new neighbor told me that there were no hummingbirds in this area, that she hadn’t seen any hummingbird for years.

I decided to place a couple of feeders in my garden with nectar made of water and sugar. A few days passed and there were no results, none a single hummingbird approached.

How are they going to get closer if the walls are higher than what they normally fly? … If there are cats nearby in my neighbors’ houses and if I don’t have colorful flowers in my garden?

My daughter told me to give up, that they wouldn’t come. But I wasn’t going to do that so easily. I usually do daily meditations and focus on what I want to attract, that day, during a meditation I focused on sending a message to the “Leader” hummingbird who lived in my previous home, I used to know it and had even named it, not sure why but I always thought it was a “him”, I focused on sending a message letting him know where we are now, and as crazy as it may sound, I asked him to tell his friends on this side of the city that we were waiting for them in our new home. Anyone would have thought that I was crazy, talking to animals from a distance with the thoughts, but I had nothing to lose, right?

The next morning, while I was working in the kitchen, a familiar sound caught my attention, I looked out the window and there it was! A shy hummingbird had come down to my garden and approached to drink from the nectar that I had prepared, this hummingbird was different from all the birds I had seen before, its body is light gray, almost white, and its head is purple, I named it “Lila”, since then, Lila comes home every day and brings new friends, we know that Lila is the leader because it coordinates what other hummingbirds can do and when they can approach to the feeder, sometimes it fights with them to hoard the feeder.

Now we usually see up to seven hummingbirds at the same time in our small garden, their sweet presence gives me peace, makes me feel accompanied.

Some cultures state that hummingbirds are messengers of positive change, and that they bring good news; it is also said that they are deceased relatives who come from the afterlife to visit us, whatever the reality is, my relationship with hummingbirds has become deep, and wherever I go, I will always seek to have them by my side, as long as they can be free and safe.
