Summary

The author is envious of a co-worker's new car, which makes their own vehicle seem less appealing by comparison.

Abstract

The author admits to feeling envious after their co-worker, Marsha, acquired a new car. Despite acknowledging that their own car is paid off and free from monthly payments, the presence of the new car parked next to their older model van has triggered a sense of inadequacy. The author is particularly conscious of the aesthetic contrast between the two vehicles, noting the bird droppings and other debris on their car, which is accentuated by the cleanliness and newness of the co-worker's car. This experience has led to a desire to improve the appearance of their own vehicle, such as by getting it washed, to mitigate the feelings of envy.

My Co-Worker Has a New Car

…and I’m a little envious

I’m trying hard to control it, but it’s not easy.

Control what? My envy over a fellow worker’s new vehicle, that’s what.

My co-worker just got a brand new car. Here are the things that don’t matter:

➡️It doesn’t matter that her old car broke down and she was forced to replace it. Yes, she drove it for years with mechanical issues, but her older model van was a little uglier than mine, so there was nothing to be jealous about.

➡️It doesn’t matter that my own vehicle has been paid off for 2 years, while her payments will continue for the next 5. Living with no car payment is fantastic; if you’ve experienced it, you know what I mean.

What’s the problem, you ask.

Thank you for asking, by the way.

Here’s what does matter:

She parks right beside me, and it’s making my older model van look bad.

This entire week, the first thing I think when I park behind the building is: I’ve absolutely GOT to get my car to the car wash.

Sheesh! I can’t even park without being reminded of how many bird droppings are on my windshield. Along with all of the other detritus that comes from parking under leafy trees in the humid south.

Gee thanks, Marsha, for suddenly making my car look like something that’s been sitting in the back lot of a mechanic’s shop for 6 months.
