My Child
I am with you
Take my hand. I will never stray.
I’ve been here for you all along the way.
We’ve zigzagged across the country, you and I.
When you were pint sized and too small to know I existed, you were the apple of my eye.
Then off to Pennsylvania we went, and the bumpy ride would come yet.
Watching you grow, and take me in your heart as your best friend, those were moments I’ll never forget.
You were a ball of creativity and self doubt. I know it wasn’t easy for you.
The answers you sought were out of grasp and took a lot of time to prove true.
I wish it had been easier. That’s all I wish for any child of mine.
Your mother loved you so, and your dad still does. Your brother, well, his cup runs over, but he hasn’t forgotten, the days you raced and fought in the throes.
Yes, your heart was big and you had plenty room for all. Mama’s joy, you were a ball of strength, though you were small.
Doing cartwheels across the yard. You thought those envelopes had to be pushed.
I made you this way, emotions and all, you are gentle but never crushed.
Always in my care, through stitches and skinned knees, uncertainty and tears.
Not a day goes by that I question your existence, sweet child of mine.
Keep working, keep looking up to the sky, add a color or two and splash that purple as liberally as you like.
I like the way you see the world. Always keep your shine. You and I still have a way to go.
I’m always here, a whisper away, and that is where I’ll stay.
Wherever life takes you, and whatever path you trod,
Always remember you are a child of God.
