My CBC Radio Interview Was Turned Into A Cool Video!

I shared lots of BIG resume mistakes.

Photo captured by the author. Video courtesy of CBC Radio.

I chuckled with my Rockstar recruiter, Steven, the morning of the CBC (Canadian Broadcast Corporation) radio interview on Alberta At Noon.

I was running late.

My hair peaks weren’t quite right.

I texted him to say,

Hey Steven, I’m running late. Hair issue ….

And, LOL. Yes, I know it’s radio and no one would see me, BUT….”

Well, thank goodness, I perfected the hair peaks…because CBC filmed the hour interview.

And, turned it into a really, really cool video!

It’s had over 10,000 views !

Take a look: https://tinyurl.com/ukrhm4u

Key takeaways:

  1. “80 % of resumes fail within 11 seconds.” (Peter Harris, Financial Post). It’s a shocking stat and it’s true.
  2. A functional resume is a mistake. Everyone does it. Sure, I want to know what is (or was) your job, but more importantly I want to know how well you performed.

3. Measure everything. I want to know all about your results.

Put the words “Key Successes” on your resume under each job and then list #’s, %’s, rankings showing how well you’ve performed.

A hiring manager is always going to want to know how well you’ve performed in the past. That’s what they’re hiring — the probability you’re going to perform and deliver the same type of results in your next role.

4. Don’t give away your age — that’s your secret. GRIN.

Remove dates (and roles) that are 10–15 years in the rear view mirror. Take off the year you graduated from high school. And, leading with phrases such as “30 years’ experience” can be working against you.
