My Blissful Wandering To Enjoy The Contrasts and Surprises of a City
Notes From a Country Girl
For a person like me, who grew up and lived in a village all of her life, working in a big city is like living in a dream. There are so many shops, skyscrapers, and historic buildings to visit. There is a lot to do, more intense energy than the one I experience in my country village.
When I go to work, I always feel like a child at Christmas, happy and disoriented by the lights. Yet, the best experience I enjoy in a city which can give you everything you need, are my blissful wanderings at lunch time.
When I am free at lunch, I look on the map to find an area of the city I don’t know, which is not too far from my office, and I walk to that place. It’s surprising how many contrasting aspects of life you can notice: from rich houses and big cars to homeless people who are sleeping on the footpath, just like in every other big city in the world.
In the streets, people are running everywhere, as if you are not allowed to waste your time. Since we are in Italy, pedestrians, bikes, scooters, and cars do not behave in the most regular way: Italians are creative people, we are artists even when driving.
The most fascinating part of my walk has to do with people because in the city everybody is well dressed. I must admit I do it, too. It’s as if everybody is happier. I know it is not enough, but taking care of your looks actually helps you feel a little better.
I think we are also victims of some prejudice which makes us feel like we are part of a group, or we are smarter people, just because we are well dressed. I know it’s a mistake: the best people I met in my life did not care about their looks, but about their souls.
Those wanderings are always surprising for me, because I realize that life is so rich in all its aspects, that even if you are trying to find your path and maybe are anxious or worried, watching different realities can help you get distracted and feel better. It’s like breathing fresh air.
A thirty-minute walk keeps me a little more active and reminds me that there are a lot of opportunities in the world, and that life is stronger than every difficulty we are facing, and it will reach you, it will send you a message while you are on a bus, looking outside the window, or walking at lunch break.
You just need to be open and ready to listen.
