My Best Memories
The top three
What are the three best memories (any achievements before becoming an adult) you have?
As we get older and older, and older, we spend less time on what we have achieved when we were little or just becoming an adult. We get into a high school, get a job, whether to continue to study four to eight years (or more), what we try to achieve at that age/time tends to change.
Of course, some people aim for one goal always.
Wanting to become a fashion designer, and became one. Wanting to become an astronaut, and became one.
What was your dream? What did you work on when you were a child? Did anything make you happy when you succeeded in doing anything?
The number 1.
When I was little, I always enjoyed some kind of artwork. A little sewing, drawing, painting, and creating something from scratch was fun. The deep dive into your creative mind, like when you are so into a book or an article you are reading and you can easily picture the world in your mind.
A small art project at school when I was a child was fun making a wooden box that opens and closes with some images carved on its sides. I wrote a little about it in another article. It was my little achievement when I was a child. Not that it was chosen for the best box of the year or anything. But it turned out exactly what I wanted.
The size of one piece of wood fits another piece of wood and another. I put those pieces together — making the top part and the bottom part. Screw two metal parts on the back of it, and I made a box that opened and closed. And it has the curved design I made. And I put a clear varnish to finish this art project.
Not just I like so much about this finished “product,” but also I received compliments from my art teacher and my mom. What’s more is, she was using it for a long time. And even after she has moved to a new place, she might still have it in her closet.
For anyone, it’s just a wooden box, but for me, the value is enormous.
The number 2.
I have no idea how I became a captain of a basketball team. I had no idea how it happened. During my junior high, I joined the women’s basketball team at the school.
After a year, and another, when the team captain was ready to name the next captain, we were all sitting on the gym floor.
Then, my name was called.
My eyes were opened wide. Me? Yes, I did my best during my practice. But, me? I wasn’t sure. Should I compare myself to those former two captains?
They were awesome as captains, as a player, and as people.
I guess I sort of wonder, really, how was I going to lead. But, it was the kind of the moment, knowing you have achieved something! And acknowledged by others whom you admired, was the moment of “Wow.”
The number 3.
Other little achievements.
Besides the number 1 & 2, there were small achievements. I enjoyed my painting. A few of them received a small “Good Job!” kind of tag. And the white cosmos paint from a carved wooden board, which I wrote about just a little last year.
Other little things may include the second last test at my elementary school. I was among a few of my little fellows who got a perfect score.
I was never a smart kid, so it was a memorable EVENT. And then I encountered this language — English. Oh, it’s a hard one.
Before becoming an adult, I lived abroad to study English. It was also my first time doing everything on my own. From doing laundry to some cooking and shopping, oh and waking up by myself — There were no wake-up calls from my mom and our funny Maltese dog.
< Our Funny Maltese before Our Dachshund > Whenever I just moved in my bed, he would come around, so I tried to avoid it by slowly covering my head with the sheet and sometimes a pillow, and he would start doing his job, DIGGING.
Wake up, wake up!!
That was his call. No one can survive or sleep again from that very attentive shoveling work around your head or shoulder. I’m not gold flakes in the sand or some kind of expensive root in the soil. But now think of it. If he was doing it as if he was finding a treasure, that’s so adorable.
You would think I could turn off the alarm clock and sleep. Nope! He even turned the alarm clock for you. Technically, he swapped the location of the alarm clock from the side like a cat hitting a toy mouse with one hand.
So I survived living abroad with so many baby first-time things and enjoyed my life in a foreign country!! Some people became my friends, and I still keep in touch with them once in a while. I guess it was one of my golden times, I would say. Good memories.
I suddenly sound like an old lady.
Those days, I constantly see, hear, learn, and try out new things by myself or with my friends. Accumulation of little achievements in life. Thanks to my friends. I didn’t feel homesick.
And English tests were okay overall.
Sum up.
My three achievements in childhood. #1 My artwork — being proud of and liked by a parent in childhood was important. #2 Being a captain of a basketball team. #3 Many little things, including new adventures in a new country.
