A YEAR-END WRITING PROMPT

My Best and Worst Moments of 2023

Digging deep into my brain for the answers

Barb Dalton posed an interesting set of questions to us asking about our best and worst moments of this past year.

Here are my answers:

  1. Your Best Moment

My best moment was gifting a digital keyboard set to some special children in my life. I haven’t seen them in a few years, but think of them often. I heard from their mother that they missed me. I miss them as well and surprised them with this musical teaching piano for Christmas. Their mother sent me a video that night of one child playing “Fur Elise.” It warmed my heart. We plan to get together in the coming year.

2. Your Worst Moment

The worst moment was when I received a letter in the mail announcing that my beloved oncologist was leaving my cancer center. I was shocked and distraught by this news. I was fortunate to have a very kind, compassionate, and brilliant surgeon/oncologist. He diagnosed me with stage 3 ovarian cancer and saved my life.

He has been with me for three years. I am heartbroken over this news. He will be a very tough act to follow. I was fortunate that I had him during the very critical time in my cancer journey. Last Friday, I was able to visit with him and say goodbye. He hugged me three times and told me I was doing great.

3. An Accomplishment

Last July, I was shocked when I opened my email and found one from Medium telling me they had boosted a story of mine. It was funny because I didn’t write the story with the intent to be boosted.

The whole thing came about because of a prompt. The prompt was what the word waves brings to mind. It immediately made me think of the waves of grief I experience(d) after my beloved mother’s passing five years ago.

I was ecstatic to have my story boosted and was grateful it was a story about my mother. She was my best friend and the most important person in my life. She is irreplaceable.

4. A Failure

I had hoped to be more active this year. I am sedentary a lot and I know that is not good for me. I wanted to walk and exercise more. I need to strengthen my legs and my back.

5. Something To Be Grateful For

I am so grateful that I have a very kind, loving, and generous brother. He visited me this year for Thanksgiving, and I was thrilled. We hadn’t spent Thanksgiving together in probably 30 years. I love when he visits and we also have a good time together.

6. One thing that happened that you hope doesn’t ever again (aside from #2)

I experienced a health issue that threw me into a serious one-month period of 24/7 anxiety. It was awful. I was a nervous wreck. The health issue and treatment caused me to sleep practically 24/7 for over two weeks. I was so fatigued and could barely function.

7. One thing that happened that you hope DOES happen again ( aside from #1)

I would love it if my brother would visit me again on Thanksgiving and also more often. He used to visit a few times a year. He is much busier and hasn’t been able to visit me as often.

8. Your motto for 2024

If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.

What are your best and worst moments of 2023?

The people below write wonderful stories. Please read them. You will not be disappointed. (Please let me know if you want your name removed from or added to the list. Either is easy to do, per your request. All you need to do is ask in the comments or a note.)
