Summary

Alan Lew shares his personal beliefs, values, and life lessons, initially compiled for his children and extended family, and now accessible to a broader audience through his writings and a dedicated website.

Abstract

Alan Lew, inspired by his wife's gift of a "Mom Remembers" book, created a 70-page book for his children, which he later adapted into a website for his family. The content, titled "My Beliefs, Values & Life Lessons," delves into his philosophical views, such as the existence of an infinite universe, the importance of the present moment, and the futility of knowing the "why" behind events. He emphasizes values like assuming the best in people, the importance of meditation, prioritizing experiences over possessions, and seizing unique opportunities. Lew also provides access to his broader life lessons and autobiographical writings, offering a paywall-free alternative on his personal website, and invites readers to engage with him through comments and questions.

Opinions

  • Lew believes in the concept of an infinite universe where anything is possible.
  • He holds that the present moment is the most significant and is always complete.
  • He is of the opinion that understanding the "why" behind events is beyond reach, and our explanations are never the whole story.
  • Lew values the practice of meditation as a crucial life skill.
  • He prioritizes experiences over material possessions but maintains that contentment is the most important state to achieve.
  • Frugality is important to Lew, yet he acknowledges the importance of not missing once-in-a-lifetime opportunities.
  • He encourages readers to assume that everyone is doing their best in their current life circumstances.
  • Lew's writings reflect his commitment to sharing his spiritual and life experiences with others, as evidenced by his active engagement with his audience and the creation of a dedicated website for his family history and beliefs.

My wife prompted me to do a Dad Remembers-type book for my three kids this past Christmas. She had done a similar Mom Remembers-type book the previous year. I started with a standard, store-bought version, but quickly moved to doing it all in MS Word instead.

It took me 2 months to complete a 70-page, 8x10" book, including photos. After Christmas, I turned the family history part of the book into a website for my siblings and extended family. I am still adding to that as I find more on our family history. I have also been writing a lot less on Medium because of this project.

The concluding section of the store-bought version of the book for my kids was titled something like “My Beliefs, Values & Life Lessons”. This is what I wrote…

MY BELIEFS

I believe we exist in an “infinite universe”

  • Anything is possible in an infinite universe.

I believe the most important moment is always “right now”

  • What we experience right now is always complete and full, and infinitely so.

I believe it is impossible to know “why” anything happens

  • We create stories that may satisfy us, but they are never the full story, there is always more.

MY VALUES & LIFE LESSONS

  • Remember that everyone is doing the best they can at this moment in their life.
  • For me, meditation was the most valuable tool I ever learned
  • Experiences are more important than things. Contentment is more important than experiences.
  • Be frugal as much as possible, but don’t miss a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
