My backyard transformed into a sugar war zone.
After a persistent hummingbird reminded me to put out his feeder, I whipped up my homemade concoction and hung it in our backyard.
But, Mr. Fickle Feathers ignored my bird brew. Apparently the neighbors offered better product.
Eager to watch flurries of hummingbirds, I cleaned his dinnerware and sweetened the deal. It worked. A little too well.
Now, he perches next to the feeder and chirps at anyone or anything that edges close to his stash. Sometimes, a plucky competitor sneaks in for slurps only to be chased away.
Google assured me Mr. Fickle Feathers doesn’t need therapy for his possessiveness.
If you see multiple hummingbirds share a feeder, it’s out of necessity. They typically claim 1/4 acre of space around their food supply and protect it aggressively.
His street name is now Mr. Fierce Feathers.
