My August 30-day Writing & Reading Challenge

Setting monthly challenges for accountability

“Nobody cares much whether you write or not. You just have to do it” ― Natalie Goldberg

There is something about announcing your writing goals. It is accountability like no other.

I like to complete goals. I think it was those elementary school years when I earned stickers which I proudly displayed on my two-pocket folders. It was a competition between my friends on who would cover their folder first with stickers.

I love the support found here at 30-Day Challenge and the freedom to alter the challenge as you wish.

At the end of each month, I plan on the writing projects I will focus on. I have endless ideas swimming around in my head. I plant them in notebooks and digital tools. I can’t do it all at the same time. (Ha!).

For August, I decided to focus on building my new publication, Fleet & Steel and supporting other Medium writers. I was inspired by Rambling Rose’s community reading challenge.

After completing the original 30-Day Challenge, I wanted to keep that accountability going. Each month I will set a challenge and announce here.

My August Plan

My goals are to grow my Medium publication and continue to support the excellent writing community.

To-do list

  • Write 15 articles for Fleet & Steel.
  • Write 10 articles for various Medium publications, some I’ve written for before and some new ones to me.
  • Read, highlight, comment on five Medium stories in my community each day.
  • Tweet one or two Medium stories each day. I use Buffer to schedule four posts to Twitter each day.

Desired Outcomes

In terms of my desired outcome, I want to continue to grow my followers (I have 226 followers as I write this) and financially make more than I did the previous month. Those are the concrete results.

Each day I already strive to return the favor of anyone who reads, highlights, and comments on my articles. I want to continue to support those in my writing community and meet new writers to make meaningful connections.

Are you taking part in a 30-day (or more) challenge right now? Share in the comments and I’ll check it out.
