My Almost Daily Journal-Some Late Garden Harvests as the Fall Cleanup Begins/Fall Decorating Almost Complete

Volume 43-Tag Along With Me on My Sometimes Boring Sometimes Interesting Sometimes Awesome Journey Through Life

Author Photo

Once again welcome back. As we head for the second half of September, the garden is winding down for the season. That said, it is still producing some. I have started the Fall cleanup process, which is an undertaking since I tend to neglect the garden this time of the year. It is time to tidy things up before winter, so come spring, it will be ready for another awesome growing season.

The Harvest Continues

It’s incredible how long the garden produces. It seems to get a second wind as fall approaches and we get more rain. So far in September, we have gotten close to 4 inches of rain which has rejuvenated some vegetables. Of course, many veggies have lived out their life cycles such as the potatoes and tomatoes. I am still getting a few tomatoes but the plants are dying off.

However, I am still getting peppers, Swiss Chard, kale, leeks, carrots, and Sweet Spanish and red onions. I replanted some cucumbers, zucchini squash, and green beans, but I doubt they will amount to much. There is one zucchini plant that survived from June and now has baby ones again. I also planted some radishes which are doing well.

A Few Pumpkins

So far I have picked 4 pumpkins, one being a really nice one, and the other 3 are small. The small size is most definitely due to the dry conditions in July and August. I planted the pumpkins on the Hugelkultur mound which was one of my experiments this year:

Overall it was a success as it produced a fairly good cucumber, squash, and pumpkin crop despite the dry conditions. I think it will be even better next year as the decaying wood which forms the mound creates even better growing conditions. Next year I also plan to use sprinklers during dry periods.

Fall Decorating Continues

Last week I wrote an article about fall decorating and the idea of a seasonal tree. Decorating your home for the different seasons and holidays can be therapeutic and is a great family activity. It gives you something to look forward to and transforms your home into your own unique world:

We have now completed all of the inside decorating including the tree and the front porch.

All that remains is the deck, however, the summer flowers are still out there. Once they are cleaned up after the first frost, I will put up some orange mini lights and a garland of fall leaves. This coming weekend we may get the first frost.
