My Almost Daily Journal-It’s Almost Go Time to Plant Tomatoes and Other Veggies
Volume 34-Tag Along With Me on My Sometimes Boring Sometimes Interesting Sometimes Humorous Journey Through Life

Welcome back my fellow gardeners. The month of May has definitely not been boring. For me it is one of the busiest of the year as the transition to Summer takes place. So far this month I have begun lawn mowing, set up the deck furniture including moving houseplants outside, opened the pool, and of course started the garden. Although I have already planted some cold hardy vegetables including peas, potatoes, onions, lettuce, and kale, I have been patiently waiting for the main event. Here in central NY State we have to wait until near the end of May to avoid the danger of frost. I have even seen frost during the first week of June. But that is very rare.
If you follow me you know that I started tomatoes, peppers, onions, leeks, and other veggies from seed. Most I started using traditional seed starting methods indoors. Some I started using Winter Sowing. If you’re not familiar with Winter Sowing (seeds planted and placed out in the cold), I encourage you to read my article and maybe give it a try next year.
The plants have been hanging out in the greenhouse on the front porch for nearly 2 months now. They have done well and it’s been a while now since I’ve had to bring them inside at night due to freezing temperatures. I certainly don’t mis that!

Over the last week or so the tomatoes and peppers have really taken off. This past weekend temperatures were near 90. The tomatoes have outgrown the greenhouse as they’re nearing a foot tall. The time has come for them to go in the garden. It doesn’t seem possible that it’s time to plant the tomatoes. However, I can’t wait for garden fresh heirloom tomatoes!
I Will Be Planting Tomatoes and Peppers This Week
I know what you’re thinking. I should wait another week or so to be safe. But looking at the extended forecast I think it will be OK. There’s a lot of planting to do so I’ll get things rolling this week.

Among the vegetables (and flowers) still on my planting list are: tomatoes, peppers, beans, carrots, leeks, cucumbers, various squashes, pumpkins, sunflowers, and more.

Many more articles to follow on my garden progress including my experimental Hügelkultur bed. This is a great time of the year for gardeners, as challenging as it may be. Are you up to the challenge?
