My 8 Songs I Would Have On A Deserted Island
These melodies would keep me full
After reading Lisa Osborne’s fun article on eight songs she would listen to if she was on a deserted island on Thursday. I immediately tried to come up with my own list. My mind went blank. No musical choices were coming to my head. After a few more minutes of nothingness in my head, I gave that challenge a rest.
As I was traveling to Corpus Christi yesterday and listening to my playlist, songs started to come to me. ‘’Oh yeah, that song and this song’’. And then before I knew it, I had my list thanks to SoundCloud and YouTube! They always save the day!
These are the 8 songs that would make me feel at home if I was on a deserted island.
1. Change by Barry White
I discovered this song about a month ago by accident, and I’m so glad I did. I can't get enough of it! I listen to it at work. So, it’ll definitely be one of my choices on a deserted island. It’s so uplifting with great background vocals telling the listener ‘’You can do it, she can do it, he can do it’’. I’ve never heard Barry sing this high before. I’m so used to hearing that deep baritone voice. His voice range is incredible.
2. My Favorite Things by John Coltrane
The music in this track gives you such a mellow vibe. I can imagine listening to this while looking at the ocean. I live for hearing the bass player play his notes! Such a great groove.
3. Wonderland by Dame D.O.L.L.A
This one always sends me into deep thought. It has me hopeful for the future. Damian Lillard is a very talented NBA player (my favorite for years now) So learning he’s also a very good rapper (Dame D.O.L.L.A is his rap name) with genuine lyrics is a bonus. I can see myself looking at the island skies while listening to this one.
4. Armageddon Time by Willie Williams
I first heard this one in the movie Ghost Dog: The Way Of The Samurai a few years ago. I had to find the name of this song immediately after hearing a sample of it. This track has a killer bass line, that keeps me listening to it over and over again. That bass says so much, it’s incredible to listen to. I love Willie’s voice and how he expresses the lyrics he sings. The other instruments in this track are amazing too. This song got me into Reggae music.
5. Joy To The World by Whitney Houston
This song always gets me hyped when I hear it. I can help but start dancing when I hear Whitney and the Georgia Mass Choir snap towards the 2:50 mark. I’ll be a lot of dancing on the island!
6. The Future Is Now by MARLOE
This one just has a great vibe that I liked. Plus, the lyrics are so relatable. I love how it’s about growing into who you really are as a person.
7. Skate by Silk Sonic
Bruno Mars is a bad mofo and so is Anderson. Paak. Them together??? Maaaaaan. They work so well together. This track gets me hyped and it’s so freaking groovy! Thanks to my friend Marzlina for putting me onto them. It’ll get you moving and grooving.
8. Don’t Stop by Foster The People
This song always reminds me of when I was working at SeaWorld in San Antonio. I remember hearing it when I would work in Dolphin’s Cove with the sun shining, and the sky being blue in the morning. It always made me feel good inside, when I listen to it on Youtube or my Soundcloud playlist.
Honorable Mention: Christopher Columbus vs Captain Kirk — Epic Rap Battle Of History
I had to sneak this one in. I fell in love with this beat, when I first heard it back in 2013. My sales trainer would watch Epic Rap Battles Of History on his phone (this was the only joy I got out of my sales job). They blew my mind, and I found them oddly inspiring (maybe because of my insane love for history). But, when I saw and heard the Christopher Columbus vs Captain Kirk one, something came over me.
I enjoyed Christopher Columbus's rap performance. I REALLY enjoyed Captain Kirk’s rap performance. But, I think it was the beat that moved me the most. It just took me to another galaxy. It still gives me that feeling when I hear it.
So, these are the songs I would have to keep me company on a deserted island. What a fun exercise! So, I’m curious readers and fellow writers. What 8 songs you would have to listen to on a deserted island?
