My 5 Favorite Souvenirs

Some souvenirs have only a price tag but mine have a sentimental value

My Photo

I love to bring home souvenirs in whatever form, kind and shape. But not in any price.

Only the cheap ones, though. If I can’t resist it, I’ll go with the one that is useful and durable enough to withstand the passing of time or repetitive usage.

The usual suspects are the ref magnets and key chains. Aside from being budget-friendly, I can tuck them anywhere in my luggage without the fuzz of excess baggage.

In times I want more souvenirs, I let my innovations do the job.

I consider city maps and brochures as souvenirs. So, Tourist Information Centers became my destination and I took whatever brochures and magazines that caught my eyes and curiosity.

If there were maps and magazines at the entrance of a supermarket or restaurant, they never escaped my scrutinizing eyes.

Without knowing it, I had accumulated more than enough.

I also consider paper bags of popular brands that has no stores here in the Philippines as souvenirs. I rummaged into the sale rack of Banana Republic to look for the cheapest t-shirt to be able to have their bag. Or the smallest lotion to have the Bath & Body Works bag.

I also consider plane tickets, boarding pass, train tickets, bus tickets, receipts and supermarket’s plastic bags as souvenirs.

Some of them are still with me even though the prints have faded and there’s nothing on them but blank pages.

I know… I sounded like a weird hoarder more than a cheapskate.

However, if I have to choose from those that I had bought as my favorites, as Linda Ng had tagged me to share, here are my 5.

1.Picasso’s 3 Musicians from MOMA

My Photo

A print of a reproduction of Pablo Picasso’s work Three Musicians. The paper is acid-and lignin-free, designed to preserve color and detail for a hundred years or more.

I bought the print at the museum store of the Museum of Modern Arts in New York in 2005. Despite its being an oldie, the whiteness of the paper remains as it was back then.

2. T-Shirt from Las Vegas

My Photo

I was in Las Vegas three weeks after the October 1, 2007 nightmare. I felt at that time, that just having that t-shirt, I can show my sympathy and support.

When the pandemic came, I started wearing it. It’s like a statement t-shirt for what we should be — to be strong, wherever we are.

3. Yellowstone Ornament

My Photo

I bought this ornament in one of the souvenir stores near the Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, USA.

A Yellowstone travel has been in the bucket list for so long. Finally, on October 2017, it happened.

4. Crucifix from Singapore

My Photo

I was about to visit a museum in Singapore. But when I saw the list of exhibits, it was more or less the same as with the ones in the NUS museum. NUS museum is inside the National University of Singapore.

Then, I saw a religious store just across the museum. I went there and saw the crucifix. I bought the crucifix with the money that I was supposed to pay for the museum’s entrance fee.

5. Playbill of Mamma Mia

My Photo

I didn’t buy this Playbill but….the only way for me to have this is to buy the ticket for the musical.

I bought the ticket in tkst in Broadway. It was a 5C Saturday morning, I stand in the queue for 1 and 1/2 hours just to avail the 50% discount for Mamma Mia.

Mamma Mia is all worth it.

However….

The Playbill in the photo above is two of my favorites too. I didn’t buy the Miss Saigon and Les Miserable tickets, so I can’t include them in the list.

In terms of sentimental value, they will top the list. For the tickets were bought in the tkts inside the World Trade Center. That was in 1999. My first and last time to set foot in WTC.
