Summary

The article discusses three main concerns with Medium's $50,000 Writers Challenge.

Abstract

Medium has announced a $50,000 Writers Challenge, but the author has three main concerns about it. The first concern is that Medium will own every story entered in the challenge for a year. The second concern is that only a small number of people will get paid, unlike the previous bonus payment system. The third concern is the high number of submissions that Medium will have to handle.

Opinions

  • The author believes that Medium's ownership of every story entered in the challenge for a year is a problem.
  • The author thinks that the new challenge will not benefit many writers, as only a small number will get paid.
  • The author is concerned about the high number of submissions that Medium will have to handle.

My 3 Main Concerns With the $50,000 Writers Challenge

You’ve heard it. Medium will be handing out $50,000 for the winner of their writing challenge. Actually, in total, it’s going to be $100,000.

$50,000 for the overall winner, $10,000 each for the winner of the 4 writing prompts, and $100 each for 100 honorable mentions.

That’s $100,000. It pales, however, in comparison to the bonus system where Medium paid out $575,000 a month. $500 for the top 1000 writers, $100 for places 1001–1500, and $50 for places 1501–2000.

My 3 main concerns:

  1. Medium essentially owns every story entered — yes, entries not only winners — for a year. You can read that in their official rules.
  2. Only a small number of people get paid. In contrast to the bonus payment.
  3. Submission numbers will be huge. How will Medium handle that many entries in a month? I’m talking ten thousands.
