My 2021 Medium Year in Review
It’s been an incredible year!
What a year it’s been!
I joined Medium in Feb. 2021 not knowing what I was getting myself into. All I really knew was that I could write whatever I wanted and be paid for doing so.
Sounds simple, right?
Yes and no.
I dove into Medium’s waters at that time without a life jacket. There have been some tidal waves, but most of the time, I’ve stayed afloat.
Now, I looked back at the year I’ve had on the platform. Not so much as a trip down memory lane for me, but also to all of you so you can hopefully take away some hope and inspiration.

Medium Helped Me Publish My First Book!
Yes, you read that right.
In March 2021, I wrote my first book titled “Life: A Collection of Short Stories” through Kindle Direct Publishing on Amazon.
Honestly, I didn’t know it was going to happen until it happened.
I learned about it through Medium, and during most of a wellness day at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, I compiled the stories into a book. I went through the whole process, and the next thing I know, my book is published.
I was interviewed by the local radio station and newspaper in my hometown of Taylorville, Illinois. I sold copies to my friends and family, and many other readers I’ve met along this journey.
Heck, I even sold copies to travelers in Galena, Illinois where my parents and I visited this summer. Nowadays, copies are still available on Amazon and at the local bookshop back home.
It was something I didn’t think would happen for a long time, but it’s a step in the right direction for me as a young writer. It taught me that if I want something in life, I have to work for it no matter what.
Because of this first book, I have more books on the way in the months to come! So be on the lookout for those!
My Medium Account Has Grown Exponentially
During my time on the platform, I’ve earned a great deal of money. If you don’t believe me, see for yourself.

Here is also my total for December thus far.

As of this writing, I have earned a grand total of $328.26. Not too bad for a first year.
But the real achievements come from my stats too. During the year, I’ve gained:
- 1,295 followers and counting
- 13 email subscribers
- 3 referred members
- And become a better writer in the process with 475+ stories.
I’ve also been a Top Writer in:
- Music
- Reading
- Books
All and all, Medium has allowed me to grow as a writer. It’s taught me all of the lessons that come along with the job like discipline, creativity and dedication.
I don’t know where I would be today without it.
I cannot wait for what 2022 has in store for me and all of us on this platform.
Closing Thoughts
Now that you’ve read my Medium journey, I would love to know what yours was like this past year. In doing so, I hope we all grow together as better writers.
That’s why we’re here, right?
I wish you nothing but the best in the year to come. I can’t wait to read what you write next!
See you next year!
Best,
Noah Nelson
