My 2 Step Plan To Overcome My Insecurity

Photo by Joanna Kosinska on Unsplash

“Every man in his lifetime needs to thank his faults. As no man thoroughly understands a truth until he has contended against it.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

When I look at other people I become insecure, where does that come from?

I have had a low self-image my whole life. I don’t know why but I’ve always felt other people are better than me.

They can be happy and have nice things but I don’t deserve them. When I sat down to think about this I asked myself two questions.

Where does this sense of insecurity come from?

What can I do to overcome it?

As I dug, I realized my insecurities are based on my feelings of inadequacy.

Why do I feel so inadequate?

I look around at other people and see all of their strengths and compare them to my weaknesses. I think that just because someone is better than me at one thing they’re a better person than me.

I know it’s untrue and unhealthy to think like this, but I can’t seem to remove these subconscious fears from my head.

These limiting beliefs are so ingrained in my brain I need to completely change my thinking.

I have these ideas of good and bad that I put on my actions and others, and accept that as the truth.

When I think about why these things are good or bad the logic falls apart.

I am making value judgments on things without knowing the whole story.

It’s very easy for us to get caught up in our own lives and our own problems. We start to think our value comes from what we have or what we do.

The metrics we judge ourselves on should be based on our goals and beliefs, not on some arbitrary number or prize.

There are two keys to overcoming the feeling of inferiority.

  1. Put yourself in the best possible situation.

We all have strengths and passions, we all have a reason to be here and something to share with the world.

When we know who we are and live a life we can be proud of we thrive.

There are so many options today for us to do whatever we want, finding what we’re meant to do makes us more confident.

This could mean anything from finding a hobby, or a new job, or starting a business.

When we know what we’re doing and are passionate about it we’re the most confident.

2. Remember everyone else sucks too.

When we fail at one thing we start to think we are failures.

Just because someone is better at something doesn’t mean we’re worthless. We just need to find the area we do excel at and do more of that.

I have a big problem with comparing myself to others, but I remind myself they are more talented than me, but not better.

We all have strengths and weaknesses.

I’m not an expert and I’m still trying to figure this out.

Questioning my assumptions about myself and my thoughts has opened my mind to all the other silly erroneous things I think daily.

I’m not going to let my thoughts control me anymore, I’m in charge now.

My thoughts work for me.
