My 100-Day Writing Progress Report
I am at day 32 of my self-abuse.
Yes, here I am, quite the baby, at a meeting with an editor, reaching out for their throat area.
The Challenge.
I’ve been trying the “1000 stories in 100 days” challenge. Now I have several hundred past stories I could elaborate on, or even point to, and I know that the stories don’t have to be of any great length, but there you are.
There are always excuses I could use regarding other work, medical problems, family needs, and many more.
Those excuses have always existed, they are not new. I already recognized their existence. So I was stupid to think I could do this. And now I’m being a baby because I am disappointed in myself.
To write ten stories a day is daunting enough, but that also means working with at least ten different publications each day. The outliers went to my own publications and made it more valuable to me in hitting the ten stories a-day goal.
56 stories
My puny 56 stories would have certainly made me even goofier than I already am, were it not for the steady hand of Lawson Wallace, Dr Mehmet Yildiz, and especially Joanie Adams acting as my north stars.
Dirty Harry said it best when he said, “A man’s gotta know his limitations.”
I fairly well know I won’t hit 1000 stories in the remaining days of the allotment. I will not give up, however.
I love to watch American football and to draw an analogy, after a series of plays, a team will huddle up and, based on their progress and their observation of their effectiveness, outline their coming plays.
Not quitting.
I’m not quitting. I’m simply calling the next play or series of plays.
As I see it from this part of the field, I’ll be doing well to reach 1000 total stories by the end of 2023, which is almost three stories per day, a much less dramatic accomplishment.
But let’s talk about the original purpose of this experiment. It was three-fold — make me known to more readers, refer traffic to my older stories, and ultimately make more money.
As far as those purposes go, yes, the little I have achieved so far has probably been at least partially responsible for the steady increase in my followers. I believe the older stories to which I have linked, have also benefitted. My bottom-line money has increased a good deal.
I know, at this point, it is customary to show a screen print of my stats page, but I have to admit, I am embarrassed at it.
Followers are fool’s gold, Pyrite, or as Elon Musk would say, Pyrex.
I was reading a story by a writer this morning with followers numbering about 10% of what I am blessed to have, and his screen print for a 30-day period was two thousand more views than mine for a 30-day period. The story lengths were similar to mine
I really don’t think I can crank out 900+ more stories in a couple more months, but I hope to continue my progress with my revised goal of 1000 total stories in my portfolio by the end of the year.
Now, all I can hope is that the algorithm doesn’t move the end of the year on me.
Thanks for reading,
